PROPERTIES
OF MATERIALS
Lesson I
Ability of Materials to Absorb
Water or Not
MARIETTA C. LEONARDO
Objective

• Classify materials
based on the
ability to absorb
water or not.
• MATERIALS THAT ABSORB AND DO NOT
ABSORB WATER
• Absorb means to take in (something, such as
liquid) in a natural or gradual way. Paper,
cardboard, sponges, pumice stones, untreated
wood, and cork are a few examples of porous
materials.
• Porous materials have small holes that allow
air or liquid to pass through. These materials
may also be called absorbent materials.
• Non-porous materials do not allow air or
liquid to pass through. They may also be called
non absorbent materials. An example of which
are hard-surfaced substances like stainless
steel, hard covering, and rigid synthetic
elements or substances.
Presentation
What materials do you think will
absorb water? What will not?
Which of the materials absorb water? Which did
not?

• APPLICATION
Read the situation below and answer the questions that follow.
Pa
Patty was carrying a pail of water but suddenly
she slips on the floor and spills the water. Which
of the following materials should she use in
cleaning the spilled water?
A. Cloth
B. Rug made of rubber
C. Tissue paper
Explain your answer.
sponge

Do not absorb
Absorbs water water
leaves

Do not absorb
Absorbs water water
cotton

Do not absorb
Absorbs water water
Styro foam

Do not absorb
Absorbs water water
Plastics

Do not absorb
Absorbs water water
Remember

The ability of materials to absorb water depends

on the chemical nature of the material. The lower
the density of the material is the greater it absorbs
water because it has spaces filled with air which
absorbs water very easily and all the spaces quickly
fill up.
EVALUATION:
Describe the following materials based on
the ability to absorb water.
Name of Materials CHARACTERISTICS OF THE MATERIALS

BEFORE ADDING AFTER ADDING PUT A CHECK IF

ABSORBS WATER
AND x if it does
not
1.Rug made of cloth

2.Cotton balls

• A. Directions: Write true if the statement is correct.
If the statement is false change the underlined
word/s with porous, non-porous, absorb or does not
absorb. Do this in your Science notebook.
_____1. Plastics are porous materials.
_____2. Non-porous materials are materials having
small holes that allow air or water to pass through.
_____3. Cotton is a porous material.
_____4. Materials made out of cloth do not absorb
water.
_____5. Wood is a material that absorbs water.
ASSIGNMENT
• DESCRIBE THE FOLLOWING
MATERIALS AFTER ADDING WATER.

1. a piece of wood
2. a towel
3. plastic bag
4. match stick
5. handkerchief
