HISTORY

The Cherokee Nation is the direct, lineal

descendant of the sovereign tribal government
that presided over much of the southeastern
United States prior to European settlement.
The Cherokee refer to themselves as "Tsa-la-gi"
or "A-ni-yv-wi-ya" meaning "The people of the
beginning", while the word Cherokee originates
from the words "Choctaw", "Cha-la-ke", those
who live in the mountains, or "Chi-luk-ik-bi",
those who live in the cave country.
The Cherokee Nation survived it all: colonial battles,
smallpox epidemics, the struggle to retain historic lands
in the Southeast, removal on "the Trail of Tears,"
participation in the American Civil War, the theft and
allotment of tribal lands, the coming of the state of
Oklahoma, the famine and depravity of the Great
Depression, and the dispersal of tribal citizens during
and after World War II.
Traditional Cherokee life was guided by a faith in
supernatural forces that linked humans to all other living
things.
