WORK, ENERGY AND POWER

WORK
Work – is a transfer of energy. One way of measuring energy is by
measuring the work done.

Work represents the physical effects of an parallel force applied to a

particle or object that results in a net displacement in the direction of the
force.
WORK
Three conditions for work to be done:

1. There must be force acting on the object.

2. The object has to move a certain distance.
3. There must be component of the force in the
direction of the motion.

F= Force (parallel to the displacement)
D= displacement (distance travelled)
𝜃= the angle between the force and displacement

• Expressed in JOULE (J)

Energy

Energy- ability to do work.

This is the reason why some perform the same work

at different rates. Energy exist in several forms such
as potential and kinetic energy.
Energy

Kinetic Energy (KE)- is the energy possessed

by an object because it is in motion.

KE = 1 mv2
2
m= √ KE
v

v= √ 2KE
m
Energy

What is the kinetic energy of a girl who has a mass of

40kg and a velocity of 3m/s?

KE = 1 mv2 KE = 1 (40kg)(3m/s)2 KE = 180 kg·m2/s2

2 2 or 180 J or 180 N·m
KE = 1 (40kg)(9m2/s2)
2
KE = 1 360 kg·m2/s2

over the plate. How fast is it moving?

v= √ 2KE

v= √ (40 kg·m2/s2)

v= √ 2(20 J)
0.1 kg
v= √ (400 m /s

v= 20 m/s
Energy

Potential Energy (PE)- is the potential energy

possessed by an object because of gravitational
interaction.

Pe= mgh h= PE m= PE
mg gh
Gravitational Potential Energy

Is the energy possessed by an object due to its

Position (relative to the ground). Every object
on the Earth’s surface possesses this energy.

GPE is determined by the height of an object above the Earth’s

center of gravity.
What is the potential energy of a 10kg rock sitting on a cliff
30 meters high?

Pe= mgh

gravitational potential energy of 73.5 J.

h= 73.5 J or (kg·m2/s2)
h= 50 m
(1. 47 kg·m/s )

Power
Power is the amount of work done per unit of
time. Time is an important factor in calculating
power. The shorter the time required to the work,
the greater the power.

Unit: Watt or J/s

1horsepower = 746Watt
