REGION OF COLOMBIA

• Is one of the six natural regions of Colombia

• It is composed of four departments
• Has a length of 1,300 km of coastline facing the Pacific Ocean
• This region is well known for its enormous diversity, both in
terms of flora and fauna and in terms of culture, race and
identity.

The most important watersheds are the San Juan Patia, Baudó, Mira, Micay Mataje, Guapi, Iscuandé,
Naya, Yurumanguí, Dagua and Anchicayá rivers.

The region has more than 240 rivers

Its forested areas represent approximately 15% of those of the entire country

Excessive humidity and temperature are typical of very humid or super humid tropical forest in the
region

The Pacific region has great biodiversity, the north has a large jungle area, while the south is
characterized by its beaches surrounded by mangroves and cliffs; a very important feature for the
exploitation of tourism
THE RIVERS
Some of the rivers with the largest flows are the Atrato,
San Juan, Patía, Baudó, Mira, Iscuandé, Micay, Telembí,
Anchicayá, Naya, Calima, Timbiquí, Dagua and
Yurumanguí.

The region has very long rivers

The hydrography of the Pacific region also influences the

development of some economic activities
CLIMATE
The Colombian Pacific region is among the wettest lowland
regions on earth.

The period of highest humidity (relative humidity of almost

100%) in the year corresponds to the months between August
and June, while usually the months of low humidity are only
June, July and part of August.

The coastal towns of Bahía Solano and Nuquí are among the
wettest settlements on the Pacific coast

Average annual temperatures in this region range from 26°C to

almost 40°C, depending on the area
WILDLIFE
The Pacific coast’s star wildlife attraction are the humpback whales which visit the
region annually between June and October to give birth and raise their young

Apart from the whales, the Pacific region is home to a large variety of species of birds,
reptiles, amphibians, and fish

The Colombian Pacific region is also the top diving destination in the country.

Birding is also a popular activity in the region.

As for the flora, it is estimated that there are at least 35 thousand species of plants in the
region, due to its proximity to the sea, there are 4 types of mangroves such as white,
black, red and piñuelo.
