System
Introduction
• In-pipe hydropower generation system is mainly composed of overhead water storage tank which provides the water
head and the mass flowrate of water within the pipe, in-pipe hydro turbine which produces mechanical energy and a
generator which converts the mechanical energy to electrical energy.

Background
• In applications such as high-rise residential buildings, water transmission lines and distribution networks, it is important
to regulate the pressure within the pipeline to ensure no water leakages and pipe failure.
• Previously, pressure regulation valves were utilized is such applications which regulated the pressure within the pipeline
by increasing the water head losses which resulted in the dissipation of the system’s potential energy.
• Therefore, in-pipe hydropower generation systems provide a modern method to simultaneously regulate the pressure
within the water pipeline and produce electricity using the system’s potential energy.

Motivation
• In these modern times, there is a high demand for clean and safe energy production methods.
• Therefore, in-pipe hydropower generation systems use the concept of energy harvesting which results in the overall
reduction of Carbon Dioxide emissions.
• Furthermore, after a certain payback period, , in-pipe hydropower generation systems become self sustainable.
