DIRECT FILLING

GOLD

2

INTRODUCTION
Gold is one of the oldest materials to be used in
restorative dentistry

It is employed as Direct filling gold which refers to that

form of pure gold which can be directly compacted into
prepared cavities.

This noble metal is an excellent option for restoring small

carious defects in teeth with sound pulpal and
periodontal status

3-Powdered gold - GOLDENT
GOLD FOIL
>These are manufactured by
beating or rolling pure gold
ingots into thin sheets
> gold foil is cut into 4x4”
sheets
GOLD FOIL
PELLETS
>These may be hard rolled or commercially
produced from a no.4 gold foil sheets
GOLD FOIL
CYLINDERS
>These may also be hand
rolled or preformed
>Usually large segments of
sheets(1/2,1/4,1/8) are cut
and rolled into cylinders.
CORRUGATED
GOLD FOIL
These are manufactured by
placing thin sheets of paper
in between the gold foil
sheets & igniting them
> The paper burns and gets
charred while the gold foil
becomes corrugated.
PLATINIZED
GOLD FOIL
>This is a laminated gold foil in which pure
platinium(15) foil is sandwhiched between two sheets
of No4 gold foil
>The sheets are beaten and joined together
.
LAMINATED
GOLD FOIL
>A combination of two or three foils with crystals
running in different directions is called a
laminated gold foil.
>it is stronger therefore used in stress bearing
areas like cusp tips and incisal edges.

ELECTROLYTIC PRECIPITATED GOLD

>This is a crystalline gold pwder formed by electrolytic
precipitation.
A. Mat gold
 This is a crystalline electrosurgically precipitated
gold that is formed into strips.
 used for building the internal bulk of the
restoration.
MAT FOIL 13
 This consists of a sandwhich of electrosurgically
precipitated gold powder between two sheets of
No.3 gold foil which is sintered and cut into
strips.
GOLD CALCIUM ALLOY
 Gold is alloyed with 0.1% calcium
 Addition of calcium produces a stronger
restoration by dispersion strengthing
 Commercially available as Electroalloy RV
POWDERED GOLD
 MADE BY COMBINATION OF CHEMICAL
PRECIPITATION AND ATOMIZATION
WITH AN AVERAGE PARTICLE SIZE OF
15μm
 Example- E-Z gold.
PROPERTIES
>Pure gold is soft malleable and ductile
and does not oxidizes under normal
atmospheric conditions.
> The most important property of gold is
its ability to be “cold welded” at room
temperature.
STORAGE OF
DIRECT GOLD

Gold can be contaminated by moisture

drugs, other impurities, this will interfere
with the cohesion of gold during
condensation into cavities .
> Should be stored in clean covered
containers away from materials which
contaminate gold.
16

Cohesive gold
Direct gold materials that are coated with a layer of
ammonia gas which is removed just before insertion of
the Gold into the cavity preparation

Non Cohesive gold

Pure gold contaminated with phosphorous or sulfurous
gases or other deleterious oxides this is non cohesive
gold
MANIPULATION OF DIRECT 17

FILLING GOLD
DEGASSING
Process of heating direct gold
materials to remove the surface
conatminanats
1. Heating the gold foil over pure
ethanol flame
2 heating in a mica tray mounted
over a n alcohol lamp
3. heating in a electric annealer
18

COMPACTION
Compaction of direct gold adapts the gold into the
details of preparation such as the line angles ,
point angles and walls
It also removes voids between the pieces of direct
gold and makes them attach to another by
cohesion
> compaction can be achieved by two methods
1. hand mallet
2. electro mallet

INDICATIONS
CLASS 1 – Small carious lesions in pits and fissures
and posterior teeth and lingual surfaces of anterior
teeth.

ClASS 2 - For minimal proximal caries in posterior

teeth especially premolars

DEFECTIVE CROWN MARGINS- Defective cast

margins of cast gold crowns may be repaired with
diret gold
CONTRAINDICATIONS 21

YOUNG PATIENTS – due to the presence of large pulp chambers direct gold
is contraindicated as the malleting process of direct gold may not be tolerated
by the pulp.

POOR PERIODONTAL STATUS- in periodontally weekend teeth direct gold

cannot be employed due to questionable prognosis

ADVANTAGES
>Direct gold i.e pure gold is resistant to tarnish and
corrosion
>Provides adequate compressive strength

DISADVANTAGES
>Esthetically it is not acceptable to most patients
>Gold is a very expensive material
> Thermal conductivity of gold is high so pulp
protection is necessary under gold restorations.
