Giant Panda in French Zoo Gives Birth to Twins
A French zoo has announced the birth of two female giant panda cubs, saying
"they are very lively, pink and plump."
The Beauval Zoo, south of Paris, said the twin cubs weigh 149 and 129 grams.
Their mother Huan Huan and father Yuan Zi are at Beauval on a 10-year loan
from China.
"Huan Huan is taking care of them very well. She took them in her mouth to
lick them and clean them. We can hear little cries," the zoo said.
The twins are the giant panda couple's second and third cubs. Their first cub,
Yuan Meng, was born in 2017 and was the first giant panda ever born in
France.
The Chinese experts who take care of the pandas at the zoo said that the cubs
were girls. However, it can be hard to know the sex of panda cubs until they are
several months old, so this will need to be checked again later.
The cubs will be named after they're 100 days old. They will spend a few years in
France before being sent to China, the zoo said.
For many years, China has gifted the giant pandas to friendly nations in what is
known as "panda diplomacy."
A number of other countries in Europe have giant pandas, including Austria, the
UK, Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain and Finland.
There are about 1,800 pandas living in the wild in China and about 500 in zoos
around the world.
