Deductive and Inductive

Approach

Pagtalunan, Princess Joy

Tunog, Neil Owen
DEDUCTIVE APPROACH
 It is a teaching method that promotes learning through deductive reasoning where rules/
generalization/ definitions of concepts are learnt first and then specific instances / examples are
studied for further understanding.

 Is a more instructor-centered approach to education.

 General to specific.
EXAMPLES
 The teacher gives the lesson for the day and asks the
learners about their ideas.

 The teacher gives a general idea/concept then asks for

examples from the students.

 The teacher gives the lesson for the day and asks the
learners about their ideas.
ADVANTAGES
 Coverage of a wider scope of subject matter.

 It can be more effective with students of a higher level.

 It can be time-saving.

 A number of rule aspects can be more simply and clearly explained than elicited from examples.
DIS

 Lack of students` involvement.

ES  Younger learners may not able to understand the concepts.

 The explanation is seldom as memorable as other forms of presentation.

INDUCTIVE APPROACH
 It promotes learning through inductive reasoning where skills of observation, comparing, classifying
are used to arrive at generalizations or definition of concepts.

 Begins with specific details, concrete data and examples, and ends with an abstract.

 Also known as discovery learning, where the learner discovers rules by observing examples.

 Specific to general
 The teacher asks the learners what they observe in the given examples,
text, pictures, etc. before giving the general idea.

 Providing an activity that gives clues to the lesson for the day

EXAMPLES
 Comparing details or classifying minor concepts before generalizing

 Teaching the classifications/examples before giving a

generalization/general lesson for the day
ADVANTAGES

 Learners are more  Learning becomes more  It helps the development

learning process. order thinking skills.
DISADVANTAGES

 It requires more time and so less  It demands expert facilitating skills on
