CONCEPT OF LIFE

Ace D. Rasco
Teacher
“Live as if you were to die
tomorrow; learn as if you
were to live forever”
- Mahatma Ghandi
CONCEPT OF
LIFE

OBJECTIVES
 Describe the characteristics of Earth that are
necessary to support life.

 Explain that the Earth consists of four subsystems,

across whose boundaries matter and energy flow

 To explore the different theories on how life began

CONCEPT OF
LIFE
Biology
 is the branch of science that studies living things:
their structure, function, reproduction, and
interaction with one another and with their
nonliving environment.

 Living things are things that possess life and all

its inherent characteristics are called biological
processes.
CONCEPT OF
LIFE

What is

Life??
What makes living things

differ from non-living

things??
CONCEPT OF
LIFE
CHARACTERISTICS OF LIVING
THINGS
 Living things are coded by genes.

 Living things are organized into basic units of life called cells.
 Living things have an orderly structure.
 Living things are irritable.
 Living things develop.
 Living things reproduce.
 Living things use energy.
 Living things evolve and adapt to their environments.
CONCEPT OF
LIFE
Living things are coded by
genes.
 All living organisms store genetic information using the
same molecules — DNA and RNA. Written in the genetic
code of these molecules is compelling evidence of the
shared ancestry of all living things.
CONCEPT OF
LIFE
Living things are organized into basic
units of life called Cells.
 Cells are the basic building blocks of living things. The
human body is composed of trillions of cells, all with their
own specialised function. Cells are the basic structures of all
living organisms. Cells provide structure for the body, take
in nutrients from food and carry out important functions.

 Cells stores the genetic information in its nucleus.

CONCEPT OF
LIFE
Living things have an orderly
structure.
 All livings things show an orderly structure, or organization.
All living things are composed of cells. Each cell contains the
genetic matter, or DNA, that provides all of the information
needed to control the organism's life processes.

Cells  Tissues  Organs  Body System  Organism 

Population Community  Ecosystem
CONCEPT OF
LIFE
Living things use energy.

 Everything you do takes energy. Energy is the

ability to change or move matter. Whether it’s
reading these words or running a sprint, it requires
energy. In fact, it takes energy just to stay alive.

 Living things needs energy to grow, move, develop

and reproduce.
CONCEPT OF
LIFE
Living things are irritable.

 When a living thing responds to its environment, it is

responding to a stimulus.

A stimulus (stimuli, plural) is something in the

environment that causes a reaction in an organism.
The reaction a stimulus produces is called
a response.
CONCEPT OF
LIFE
Living things develop.

 Organisms add more and more cells to form more

tissues and organs as they grow. The Growth
and development of living organisms are not the
same things. Growth is the increase in size and mass of
that organism. Development involves the
transformation of the organism as it goes through the
growth process.
CONCEPT OF
LIFE
Living things Reproduce.
Reproduction is the biological process by which new individual
organisms – "offspring" – are produced from their
"parents". Reproduction is a fundamental feature of all known
life; each individual organism exists as the result
of reproduction.
Two Types of Reproduction

Asexual reproduction involves one parent and produces offspring

that are genetically identical to each other and to the parent.

Sexual reproduction involves two parents and produces offspring

that are genetically unique.
CONCEPT OF
LIFE
Living things evolve and adapt to
their environments.

 Living organisms are adapted to their environment.

This means that the way they look, the way they
behave, how they are built, or their way of life
makes them suited to survive and reproduce in
their habitats.
CONCEPT OF
LIFE

What Is

Life?
CONCEPT OF
LIFE

Life is the aspect of existence that

processes, acts, reacts, evaluates, and evolves
through growth (reproduction and
metabolism) and uses energy for physical and
conscious development.
