SUBTOPICS:

• 1.1 Location of the Philippines using a

coordinate system
• 1.2. Location of the Philippines with
respect to landmasses and bodies of
water
• 1.3. Protection and conservation of
natural resources
Natural Resources
OBJECTIVE:
Recognize that soil, water,
rocks, coal, and other
fossil fuels are Earth
materials that people use
as resources;
OBJECTIVE:
Describe ways of
using Earth’s
resources sustainably.
PRE-TEST
(Week 1: Day 4)
Direction: Identify what is
being described by the
following items. Choose your
answer from the options and
write it on your answer sheet.
ITEM # 1
These are materials or
elements from the
environment that people
use to meet their needs.
ITEM # 2
These refers to a resource
that people can be use
again and again but its
supply can be replaced.
ITEM # 3
These refers to a
resource that cannot be
replaced or may be
replaced for a long
period of time.
ITEM # 4
This means using a
natural resource so that
it is not depleted or
permanently damaged.
ITEM # 5
This means turning a
used product into
another product that
can be used.
Natural Resources
What is a Natural
Resource?
These are materials
or elements from
the environment
that people use to
meet their needs.
What is a Natural
Resource?
These are the
substances that
are supplied by
nature and needed
for survival.
1. What are the Earth’s
Natural Resources?
• Mineral Resources
• Energy Resources
• Living Resources
• Air
• Water
• Sunlight
• Soil
2. Resources are limited and are either
Renewable or Non renewable
3. What are Renewable Resources?
• Renewable Resources
can be replaced by
nature at a rate close to
the rate at which they are
used.
What are examples of
Renewable Resources?
• Vegetation
(Crops &
Forests)
• Sunlight
• Air
• Soil
• Geothermal
• Water
• Ice
4. What are Nonrenewable
Resources?

• Resources that
exist in a fixed
amount
• Nonrenewable
are renewed
very slowly or
not at all.
What are examples of
Nonrenewable Resources?
•Graphite
• Coal
•Sulphur
• Oil
•Gypsum
• Natural Gas
•Uranium
• Petroleum
•Phosphate
• Sand, Stone, Rock, Potash,
& Gravel & Nitrates
• Salt •And other
• Talc Minerals
Examples of Nonrenewable
Natural Resources

• Talc

• Graphite
What is an Ore Mineral?
• The metallic element or
valuable mineral part of the rock
is known as the Ore Mineral
• The remaining part of the rock
is called the Gangue
Natural Resources
• Copper ore

• Iron ore
What is a Mineral
Reserve?
•The known deposits of a mineral
in ores that are worth mining
5. Nonrenewable
Energy Resources
• A. Fossil Fuels are
nonrenewable and may
cause pollution
• They are relatively cheap
and easy to extract and use.
(Examples include: Coal, Oil,
Petroleum, and Natural
Gas).
5. Nonrenewable
Energy Resources
• B. Nuclear power: energy is created
by atomic fission. It produces very
little air pollution, but it does
produce toxic waste that takes
millions of years to decompose. It
uses the radioactive mineral
Uranium, which is nonrenewable.
6. Renewable Energy Resources
Have less of an impact on • Water
the environment and • Wind
promote sustainability • Sun
(the ability for future • Geothermal
generations to have the Energy
same resources that we
do)
7. Environmental Cost
v/s Economic Benefit
• Modern living standards are
supported by extensive use
of both renewable and
nonrenewable resources.
7. Environmental Cost
v/s Economic Benefit
• There are advantages + and
disadvantages - to using any energy
source.
• Extraction and use of any resource
carries an environmental cost that
must be weighed against the economic
benefit.
8. Philippines has many
natural resources
In Philippines, major rock and
mineral resources include: coal
for energy, gravel and crushed
stone for road construction, and
marble for making concrete.
How does the way in which some
resources are extracted and used
affect the Earth’s environment?
• Can lead to pollution of
land, water, and air
• May contribute to global
warming
• Destruction of landscape
may occur
Use and Misuse of Natural Resources
• Pollution is the action or process of making
natural resources unsafe or unusable
– Smoke and exhaust causes the air to become
dirty and harmful to breathe
– Waste dumped into waterways harms fish and
animals
– Nuclear waste can pollute air, water, and soil
Advantages VS Disadvantages
For each energy source listed below
there are advantages and disadvantages
of using it.
– Fossil fuels
– Hydro
– Wind
– Geothermal
– Solar
What is the study
that deals with the
conservation of our
environment?
Ecology
• It is the study of all living things in
relation to each other and the
environment
– Helps people to better understand the
environment
– Teaches people how to protect it
Why do we need
to study
ECOLOGY?
To attain
SUSTAINABILITY
!
• Sustainability – using a natural
resource so that it is not
depleted or permanently
damaged
• Sustainability reduces pollution
and helps to keep the
environment safe
What is
CONSERVATION?
• Conserve – to save
• Using alternative energy sources
helps to conserve limited fossil fuels
–Hybrid engines in cars and trucks
use much less gas
–Wind turbines can produce electric
power
How can we
conserve our
natural
resources?
• Alternative energy – using energy from
renewable resources such as wind/sun
– Hybrid engines in cars and trucks use
much less gas
– Wind turbines can produce electric power
• Protect natural resources by
following the three Rs

Reusing Reducing
Products Waste

Recycling
Products
Reusing Products
Ways to Reuse Products
Carry a reusable tote bag when shopping.
Reuse wrapping paper, plastic bags, and boxes.
Give outgrown clothes to others.
Use the back sides of paper for notes.
Cut up old sheets and towels for cleaning rags.
Donate old items to various organizations.
Make art projects out of discarded items.
Reducing Waste
• You can reduce waste by
– precycling, or buying products that
reduce waste
– reading labels to avoid buying hazardous
waste products
– avoiding buying disposable products
– buying refills instead of single packages
Recycling Products
• Recycling – turning a used product into another
product that can be used
• Recycling is one way to dispose of goods and
get the most use from them
– Paper
– Plastic
– Bottles
– Cans
– Scrap metal
continued
• You can recycle by
– participating in recycling programs
– buying products from companies that use
recycled materials and practice recycling
– buying environmentally friendly products
– contacting companies that generate a lot of
waste to ask about their recycling policies
Help in Improving Energy
Efficiency
• Buy appliances that use less energy
– Check Energy Guide labels
• Turn off appliances when not in use
• Keep appliances in good repair
• Walk or ride a bike instead of using a car
• Use public transportation
• Learn about programs to conserve energy
