SHAPES OF NAILS
OBJECTIVES:
1.Identify the parts of a nail structure and basic nail shapes.
2. Perform nail trimmings base on the selected nail shapes.
3. Actively participate in the class discussion.
4. Value the importance of safety during nail trimming of nails.
Nails- are plate of keratin that lies on the tips of the fingers and toes.

Keratin- any various sulfur- containing fibrous proteins that chemical


basis of horny epidermal tissues( such as hair and nails)
NAIL- is a plate of keratin that lies on the tips of the fingers and toes. The main purpose of the nail is to protect the ends of
fingers and toes and to help the fingers grasp small objects. Nails are part of the skin and are made up of the same protein.
Nails are composed of the hardest keratin.
It is very important for manicurist to learn and understand the anatomy and function of the nails so you could give your
clients a professional and responsible service and care.

PARTS OF A NAIL STRUCTURE
1. Free- Edge- the part of the nail in which you
are going to shape.
Found at the top of your fingernail.
2. Nail Plate- The visible part of your
nail.
3. Nail Bed- It is where the nail plate
lies.
4. Lunula- the white spot of your nail
found at the bottom. Other known as
half moon.
5. Hyponychium- it is the area of the
epithelium, particularly the thickened
portion , underlying the free-edge of the
nail plate.
6. Nail Groove- this lies alongside of the edge
the edge of the nail plate.
7. Nail Wall- These are the folds of the skin
overlapping the sides of the nails.
8. Cuticle- The overlapping epidermis of your
fingernails or toenails.
9. Mantle- Is the layer of the epidermis
found at the base of the nail, before
the cuticle. The main function of the
mantle is to protect the matrix from
physical damage.
10. Matrix- It is the area where your finger-
nails and toenails start to grow.
11. Eponychium- Is the thickened layer of the
skin at the base of the fingernails and toe
nails.

NAIL TRIMMING PROCEDURE
1. Prepare the instruments for this task.
Nail cutter that has small or medium
slightly curved blades which are suitable
for trimming.
2. Before using your nail cutter, make sure
that it is clean. Wash/ disinfect your nail
cutter to remove dust and germs,
especially when you are sharing your nail
cutter with someone else. Dry it
thoroughly after washing or disinfecting.
3. Wash/ disinfect your hands wipe them
dry with any towel or tissue paper . This
process cleanse your fingernails and
helps soften them making them easier to
cut.
4. You must cut your nails in a place where
you can collect the trimmed nails.
5. Decide the shape of nails. Decide which
shape you actually want( Let the patron
or model decide/select)After deciding,
lift your nail cutter and start cutting.
6. Start cutting your nails from the little
finger.

7. Make at least two or three cuts of a fingernail until it is snug.

Follow the curveof the nail to get a clean cut .Check skin
flaps after each cut and remove them
carefully.
8. Sit comfortably and crouch your knee side to easily reach up
and see the nails
carefully.
9. After cutting the nails, use a nail file to smooth any rough
odd surface on your
nails.
10. Apply some moisturizer on your hands to keep the cuticles
moisturized and
smooth.
ACTIVITY:( Each partner is given 10 minutes
to perform.)
1. Go to your respective partner.
2. Your PPE and the tools/implements
be checked by your teacher.
3. Perform nail trimmings based on the
shape being discussed.
4. Follow the nail trimming procedure.
5. Let your patron/ model select the
shape they want.
6. Observe safety measures when
performing the activity.
