• Summary: My name is Ali Hassan and I’m a resident of
Islamabad with my roots from Attock District. The
relationship of petroleum industry and Attock District
dates back a long time. Attock District holds the
distinction of being one of the first areas in Pakistan
where Oil was discovered. The main motivation for me to
join this internship was that MPCL is a leader in Oil and
Gas industry with highly skilled work force and high
standards of professionalism, and I also wanted to
contribute my share in developing the oil and gas sector
of Pakistan as a skilled engineer. In future I want to see
myself achieving breakthroughs in Oil and Gas sector for
Pakistan so that my country can become a world leader in
this technology.
Introduction: Company
• Mari Petroleum Company Limited
Mari Petroleum is one of the leading integrated exploration and production companies in Pakistan, with a net
hydrocarbon production of 103,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day. With a 21% market share, MPCL is the
second-largest gas producer in Pakistan and have a strong reserve base of around 600 million BOE. The
exploration and production Portfolio of MPCL is spread across all four provinces of Pakistan. They have 23
exploration licences and 13 development leases with a total concession acreage of about 40,000 sq km in the
country. MPCL is proud of being one of the highest contributors to the national exchequer i.e., 363 billion paid
in taxes and levies and saving foreign exchange reserves of around PKR 1,300 billion in the last 5 years.
Introduction: Department of Internship
• My internship was with Mari Services Division at Rig Mari-1 in Daharki field at Well-HRL-122.
• Mari Services Division (MSD), i.e., the services arm of MPCL, provides an in-house capability of acquiring
gravity and magnetic surveys, 2 & 3D seismic acquisition, seismic data processing, drilling, and mud logging
services. With seismic acquisition units and drilling rigs, MPCL can operate in challenging and security-
sensitive areas of Pakistan. MPCL fleet not only provides flexibility for own operations but also enables them
to offer services to the external customers. Rig Mari-1 is a 1500 HP drilling rig.
Introduction: Facilities Provided By the
Company
• The company provided accommodation, food and transport free of
cost.
• Stipend: 10000 pkr
• Duration: 6 Weeks (12th July till 22nd August).
• Location: Daharki Field, Ghotki District, Sindh

Rotary System
The rotary system is used to rotate the drill string, and therefore the
drill bit, on the bottom of the borehole. The rotary system includes all
the equipment used to achieve bit rotation.
Top Drive System (TDS)

• A top drive is a big motor system which is hoisted in a

derrick or mast of a drilling rig. A top drive is a
modern rotating system which has been popular for
many drilling contractors and oil operators. Top drives
can be used on all types of rigs, from truck-mounted
rigs to offshore rigs.
Rotary Table
• Rotary Table: A rotary table is a mechanical device on a drilling rig that
provides clockwise (as viewed from above) rotational force to the drill
string to facilitate the process of drilling a borehole.
Mud Circulatory system
• The circulation system comprises of the equipment from which the drilling mud as
a primary barrier is circulated back and forth to keep the well under control and
prevent from facing the well control situation. The main functions of drilling fluids
are to clean the hole of cuttings made by the bit and to exert a hydrostatic
pressure sufficient to prevent formation fluids from entering the borehole. Drilling
fluid (mud) is usually a mixture of water, clay, weighting material (Barite) and
chemicals. The main components of circulation system are: Mud pumps, De
sander/ De silter, Vacuum De gasser and Shale shaker. Shale shakers remove large
solids from the drilling mud. Afterwards the De silter and De sander removes finer
particles. The Vacuum De gasser removes any dissolved gasses in the drilling fluid.
Afterwards the drilling fluid is sent to the mud tanks. The mud pumps then pump
the mud into the bore hole. The control of mud pumps is provided in the driller
console.

Well Control System
• The well control system prevents the uncontrolled flow of formation
fluids from the wellbore. When the bit penetrates a permeable
formation that has a fluid pressure in excess of the hydrostatic
pressure exerted by the drilling fluid, formation fluids will begin
displacing the drilling fluid from the well. The flow of formation fluids
into the well in the presence of drilling fluid is called a kick.
Power Generation System
• The electrical power generators are driven by diesel powered internal
combustion engines. At Rig Mari-1 4 X CAT generators are used to
generate electricity. There are two VFDs (Variable Frequency Drive)
used at this Rig. Electricity is then supplied to electric motors
connected to the draw works, rotary table and mud pumps. The
variable-frequency drive (VFD) is a device that converts a fixed AC
voltage and frequency into an adjustable AC voltage and frequency. It
is used to control the speed of an AC motor. By adjusting the voltage
and frequency the AC induction motor can operate at many different
speeds. The control of all the pumps and draw works available at the
human machine interface in driller console.
Hoisting System
• It consists of draw works, crown block, travelling block and dead-line anchor.
It was observed that the hoisting system is a large pulley system which is
used to lower and raise equipment into and out of the well. In particular, the
hoisting system is used to raise and lower the drill string and casing into and
out of the well. The draw-works consists of a large revolving drum, around
which a wire rope (drilling line) is spooled. The drilling line is threaded
(reeved) over a set of sheaves in the top of the derrick, known as the crown
block and down to another set of sheaves known as the travelling block. This
hook is used to suspend the drill string. A set of clamps, known as the
elevators, used when running, or pulling, the drill string or casing into or out
of the hole, are also connected to the travelling block. The working of
hoisting system was observed during operation.
Information about Bore Hole and Drilling
Plan
• Objectives of the Well:
• Drilling Objectives:
• Hit all sub-surface Targets within Target Tolerances.
• Successfully achieve well target with desired well TD.
• Obtain the required Geological information.
• Drill the well within planned time.
• Successfully complete the well as HRL Gas producer.
• Geological Objectives:
• Maximizing the well bore reservoir drainage area & production from flank. Therefore,
targeting 15 –20 MMSCFD of gas rate.
