enjoyed by Cavite Arsenal that the taxes and falla—the fine
employees, such as non-payment of paid to be free from forced labor—

Spanish Version/Accounts of
the Mutiny
Jose Montero y Vidal portrays the Cavite Mutiny of 1872 in Spanish. His
narrative is predicated on the idea that the tragic incident of January 20,
1872 was the result of a coordinated attempt by angry Cavite Arsenal
workers and native soldiers who wilfully rebelled against Spanish rule
and were thus guilty of sedition and rebellion. By carrying out such
deeds, Spanish authorities were able to justify the execution of major
opponents of the country's rulers and friars, as well as the life sentences

and deportations of those natives who opposed their unjust rule. The Readin e

to accounts, it is made obvious that the mutiny was turned into a revolution by
Spanish authorities and friars as a means for Filipinos to free themselves from the
Spanish monarchy.

Battle of the Mutiny
Mestizo Sergeant Fernando La Madrid served as their captain. Eleven Spanish
officers were slain as they took control of Fort San Felipe. When rockets were fired
from the city walls that night, the mutineers believed that soldiers in Manila would

following day after being besieged by a regiment under the command of General
Felipe Ginoves. Ginoves then gave the order for his soldiers to open fire on the
prisoners, including La Madrid.

The three priests who were accused of treason and
sedition in Spain were executed by garrote after the
Spanish prosecutors bought a witness to testify against
them. Numerous Filipinos were profoundly affected by
their execution, notably Dr. Jose Rizal, the nation's hero,
who wrote Noli Me Tangere in their honor.

Aftermath of the Mutiny
Some Filipino soldiers were disarmed and eventually transported into
exile on the southern island of Mindanao in the early aftermath of the
rebellion. While members of the native clergy led by the GOMBURZA
were convicted and executed by garrote, those accused of directly
assisting the mutineers were apprehended and given life sentences. The
Filipinos had intense anger and bitterness in response to Gomburza's
death. They questioned the government of Spain and demanding
reforms.
