Barcode

What is a bar code?

A barcode is an optical machine readable

representation of data relating to the object to
which it is attached.
Quick Response Code

 What is a QR code?
 It is two-dimensional bar code that is widely
used to encode and provide access to
information.
QR code
 The QR code system was invented by in 1944 by Toyota’s subsidiary – Denso
wave.
 Initially used to track vehicles and for tracking parts during manufacture.
 Now it’s also used to easy link and transfer information on smart phones.
 The information in a QR code is typically some sort of actionable text that directs
the phone to take some sort of action.
How QR code works?
User connects with
QR Code Generator Print or Link
smartphone

It requires a QR code scanner application which is to be installed in

smart phone to decode the information encoded in the QR code.
 The QR Code system consists of a QR code encoder and decoder. The encoder is
responsible for encoding data and generation of the QR code, while the decoder,
decodes the data from the QR code.
 QR codes are made up of black and white squares.
 Each of these squares is called a module.
 In every QR code, there are certain modules that must not be covered or edited, else
the code won’t scan.

Decryption
• The three large squares highlighted in red are the position
markers which tell where the edges of the code are.

• The smaller red square is an alignment marker.

• The red strips of alternating black and white modules are called
timing patterns. They define the positioning of the rows and
columns.

• The green sections determine the format. This tells the scanner
whether it’s a website, text message, Chinese symbols, numbers
or any other combination of these.

• The modules highlighted in blue represent the version number.

Characteristics of a QR code
1. All Direction(360 degree) High-Speed Reading
2. Resistant to distorted symbols
3. Linking Functionality of the Symbols

 QR code has a linking functionality which will enable a single symbol to be

represented in several symbols by dividing it.
 A single symbol can be divided into 16 symbols at maximum.
Uses and Application
 URL : A QR code can be used to encode the text of a URL, which will be opened
using the Web browser.
 UPI (Gpay, Paytm) : Using QR codes the merchant can receive payments from the
buyer by scanning the QR code to send money.
 SMS : A QR code may contain a mobile number that is ready to receive a text
message. The QR code reader would prompt the phone to open the messaging
client, and would open a new message that the user can compose and send
 The QR code can store up to 4296 alphanumeric or 7089 numeric characters.
