What is Communication?
What is Communication?

Transfer and understanding of meaning.

Transfer means the message was received in

a form that can be interpreted by the receiver.

Understanding the message is not the same

as the receiver agreeing with the message.
Basic Communication Process

Communication refers to the act by one or more
persons of sending and receiving messages – distorted
by noise- with some effect and some opportunity for
feedback

Definition of Communication :

Communication in its simplest form is the

transmission of a message from a sender to a
receiver.
So, communication is the process through
which messages are exchanged through a
channel between senders and receivers with
some effect and feedback.
The Communication model :
Any communication process must have the following elements :
Sender – message – channel – receiver – feedback .
So , the communication process starts from the source or the
sender , who sends a certain message through a channel or
medium to the receiver , who respond with a certain reaction or
feedback .
We can conclude that :
1- ( sender- receiver ) :
People get involved in communication because they have
information ,ideas and feelings they want to share . This sharing
is not a one –way process, when one person sends ideas and
others receive them and then the process is reversed.
The Communication model :

2- Messages :
The message is made up of the ideas and feelings
that a (sender-receiver ) want to share Messages
are the words and gestures that people express
to one another when they interact .
All communication messages are made up of two
kinds of symbols verbal and non-verbal .
The Communication model :

A- Verbal symbols : mean using words to express

your ideas and thoughts .

B- Non-verbal symbols : are ways to communicate

without words they include facial expressions ,
gestures , voice tones and appearance.
The Communication model :
3-Media / channels :
Media are the means through which symbols are
transmitted . Channels may be familiar like radio
, TV, newspapers and internet . Other channels
communicate non-verbal signs .
For example : when you apply for a job you use
non-verbal signs to send out a positive message.
Like : a firm handshake ( touch ) , appropriate
clothing ( sight ) .
The Communication model :

4- Feedback :
Feedback is the response of the (receiver –
sender ) to each other . Feedback is vital to
communication because it lets the
participants in the communication see
whether ideas and feelings have been
shared in the way they were intended .
For example : you tell me a joke and I smile.
Feedback

Feedback could be acknowledgment,

evaluation or another message.

• Feedback needs to be objective and fair.

• Communicate directly to the person, and ASAP.

• Choose where, when and how carefully.

• Show respect and carefully choose your words.

that’s why we call it mass..
So , mass communication is disseminating

receivers through the mass media, hence
the language used has to suit the average
