I. DEPENDENCE
 The LORD had said to Abram, “Go from
your country, your people and your father’s
household to the land I will show you.
“I will make you into a great nation,
and I will bless you;
I will make your name great,
and you will be a blessing.
I will bless those who bless you,
and whoever curses you I will curse;
and all peoples on earth
will be blessed through you.”
GENESIS 12:1-3
By faith Abraham, when called
to go to a place he would later
receive as his inheritance,
obeyed and went, even though
he did not know where he was
going. 
HEBREWS 11:8
 The LORD appeared to
Abram and said, “To your
offspring I will give this
land.” So he built an altar
there to the LORD, who had
appeared to him.
GENESIS 12:7
 II.
PERSISTENCE
 He took him outside and
said, “Look up at the sky and
count the stars—if indeed
you can count them.” Then
he said to him, “So shall your
offspring be.”
GENESIS 15:5
 The LORD said to Abram after Lot had
parted from him, “Look around from where
you are, to the north and south, to the east
and west. All the land that you see I will give
to you and your offspring forever. I will
make your offspring like the dust of the
earth, so that if anyone could count the dust,
then your offspring could be counted. Go,
walk through the length and breadth of the
land, for I am giving it to you.”

III. PERMANENCE
 So Sarah laughed to herself as she
thought, “After I am worn out and my
lord is old, will I now have this
pleasure?”
Then the LORD said to Abraham, “Why
did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Will I really
have a child, now that I am old?’ Is
anything too hard for the LORD? I will
return to you at the appointed time next
year, and Sarah will have a son.”

IV. REVERENCE
 GOD’S COMMAND
The LORD had said to Abram, “Go from your
country, your people and your father’s household to
the land I will show you. 12:1
Go, walk through the length and breadth of the
land, for I am giving it to you.” 13:17
So the LORD said to him, “Bring me a heifer, a
goat and a ram, each three years old, along with a
dove and a young pigeon.” 15:9
Then God said, “Take your son, your only son,
whom you love—Isaac—and go to the region of
Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on a
mountain I will show you.” 22:2
ABRAHAM’S RESPONSE
So Abram went, as the LORDhad told him; and
Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five
years old when he set out from Harran. 12:4
So Abram went to live near the great trees of
Mamre at Hebron, where he pitched his tents.
There he built an altar to the LORD. 13:18
Abram brought all these to him, cut them in two
and arranged the halves opposite each other; the
birds, however, he did not cut in half. 11Then
birds of prey came down on the carcasses, but
Abram drove them away. 15:10
Early the next morning Abraham got up and
loaded his donkey. He took with him two of his
servants and his son Isaac. When he had cut
enough wood for the burnt offering, he set out
for the place God had told him about. 22:3
“Here I am, Lord.”

“Why me, Lord?”

Abraham came to the maturity of his faith that enabled him to say,
“I and the boy will go… we will worship… we will come back”-
knowing that the worship involved raising the knife over Isaac.
 “Believe me, it really works. You have to
give it all away before you can get anything
back.”
