NOTABLE FILIPINO

AUTHORS AND
THEIR WORKS
 Literature is abundant in different forms. It could be
found in blogs, online newspaper, magazines,
journals, performances of songs, skits and amateur
films which can be found on YouTube and other
social media flat forms.
But before literature was able to reach this far, let
us not forget the early writers and authors who
have been great contributors to the abundance of
our literature today.
Jose Garcia Villa
 He was born in Manila in 1908.
 He attended the University of the Philippines but
was suspended in 1929 after publishing a series of
erotic poems in the Philippine Herald Magazine.
 On the same year, he won a short story
contest through Philippines Free Press and used
the prize to travel to the United States where he
studied at University of New Mexico.
 He became the only Asian poet in a
community in New York City.

 In 1933, Villa’s “Footnote to Youth: Tales of the
Philippines and “Others” became the first
book of fiction by a Filipino author published
by a major United States-based press.
 In 1973, Villa was named a National Artist of the
Philippines.

 She grew up in Albay, Camarines Sur, at the
foot of an active volcano.
 She published novels, short stories, dramas,
and poems.
 Her plays have been produced and performed on
stage and radio in Australia, Philippines,
Spain, USA, Canada, Singapore, France, China,
Thailand and Slovak Republic.

 She was born in Tondo, Manila.
 She took up Journalism in the Lyceum of the
Philippines and eventually stopped because all
she wanted to do was to write.
 She started writing when was 16.
 Her first stories were published in the
magazine, Liwayway.

chair of the Kapisanan ng mga

Amado Hernandez
 He is a playwright and novelist, one of the
Filipino writers who practiced “committed art.”
 In his view, the function of the writer is to act as
the conscience of the society and to affirm the
greatness of human spirit in the face of
inequity and oppression.
 Hernandez’s contribution to the development
of Filipino prose is considerable – he stripped
Tagalog of its ornate character and wrote in prose
closer to the colloquial than the official style.

Merlie Alunan
 
 She spent time in different places in Visayas and
Mindanao at different times of her life and she
was able to acquire fluency in Visayan
languages.
 She finished her Bachelor’s Degree in
Education at University of Visayas then later
on practiced Education in several school all
over Visayas.

 Alunan initiated creative writing workshops in
UPV Tacloban College where she also intensified
her advocacy to encourage young ones to write in

Lope K. Santos
 He was a Tagalog language writer and former
senator of the Philippines.
 
 He is best known for his 1906 socialist novel,
“Banaag at Sikat” and his contributions for the
development of Filipino grammar and Tagalog
Ortography.

Alejandro Roces
 He is a short story writer and an essayist, and
he is considered as the country’s best writer
of comic short stories.
 He is known for his widely anthologized story,
“My Brother’s Peculiar Chicken.”
 His works have been published in various
international magazines and have received
numerous national and international
recognition.

 Roces had always focused on the neglected
aspects of the Filipino cultural heritage.
 Ever the champion of Filipino culture, he
brought to public attention the aesthetics of

 He was an Ilocano who wrote in English.
 He was best known for his widely
anthologized short story, “How My Brother
Leon Brought Home a Wife” which received

 She was an educator who authored the first

Nick Joaquin
 He is a Filipino novelist, poet, playwright,
biographer, essayist and a National Artist
for Literature.
 Joaquin wrote largely about the Spanish
colonial period and the diverse heritage of
the Filipino people.
 He often dealt with the co- existence of
primitive and civilized dimensions of
human psyche. Joaquin’s most acclaimed
play is “A Portrait of the Artist as Filipino.”

Carlos Bulosan
 He was a Filipino-American author, poet, and
an activist. A chronicler of the Filipino American
experience during the 1930s- early 1950s.
 He is best remembered for his semi- fictional,
semi-autobiographical novel, “America is in the
Heart” – a staple in American Ethnic Studies and
Asian American Studies classes.
 Bulosan’s works describe the experience of growing
up poor in a rural area of the Philippines,
chronicling social and economic conditions
created by the American and Spanish colonialism.
