This is measured motion of flow,
characterized by basically regular
recurrence of elements or features
as beats, sounds or accents

 all works of art require rhythm
 is most clearly seen through dance –
art of movement
 nature itself is a manifestation of
rhythm

RHYTHM
is a term which denotes an aspect of a
quality of movement that is sometimes
thought of as dance. When an individual
moves in response to a particular rhythm or
music we call the movements as rhythmic
movements or rhythms.

DANCING
 means expressing one’s emotions
through movement disciplined by
rhythm. It is an act of moving
rhythmically and expressically to an
accompaniment.

The word “dancing” came from
an old German word “danson”
which means “to stretch”.

DANCE
This refers to movement set to music
where there emerges organization,
structure and pattern. It is a
composition that implies arrangement
of parts into a form.

CREATIVE RHYTHMS
 The simplest form of dances or called
natural dances.
 Creative rhythms are actually for children in
the elementary grades.
 Sometimes called fundamental rhythms
 End – product of exploration and
improvisation.

FOLK/ETHNIC DANCE
A cultural art from handed down from
generation to generation. It
communicates the customs, beliefs,
rituals, and occupation of the people of
a region or country.

SOCIAL AND BALLROOM


DANCE
Gives opportunities to develop the individual’s
ability to communicate, mingle and socialize
with other people. The setting of the social and
ballroom dance is a social gathering with the
more formal atmosphere.

RECREATIONAL DANCE
Recreational dance includes dance mixers,
square dance, round and couple dances. Many
of these dances have simple patterns and
combination of steps. The setting is usually
informal gathering.

UNDERLYING BEAT OR PULSE


BEAT
The steady continuous sound that is
heard or felt throughout any rhythmical
sequence. It determines the signature of
a piece of music or movements.

MEASURE
Refers to the identical grouping of
underlying beats
RHYTHMIC PATTERN
A definite grouping of sounds or beats
related to the underlying beat. It is also
called melody pattern.

PHRASING
A musical phrase is a group of measures
that gives the feeling of unity.
ACCENT
The force or emphasis given to any one
beat in a series of pulse beat in a
measure.

TEMPO
The ratio of speed of the movement,
music, or accompaniment.
INTENSITY
The quality of the movement or music.
It refers to dynamics or force, such as
heavy and light.

DIRECTION
The line of movement taken which may be
forward, backward, sideward, diagonal, upward
or a combination of those mentioned.
LEVEL
Movement through space that may be done at a
high, low or medium level.

Refers to the area covered as the body moves.

FLOW PATTERN
The path or design on floor that is made while in
space is what is termed as flow pattern

1. Dancers stand apart.
2. There is little, if any, bodily contact.
3. Most dancer are in long formation.
4. Most dances are done by pairs or couples.

COMMON DANCE TERMS USED IN FOLK DANCING

1. Arms in Lateral Position – both arms at


one side, either right or left, at shoulder,
chest or waist.
2. Brush – weight in one foot, hit the floor
with the ball or heel of the other foot and lift
that foot form the floor to any directions.

3. Cabeceras – the couples occupying the


width of the ball when dancers are in square
formation (head couple).
4. Clockwise – like the motion of the hands
of the clock.
5. Counter Clockwise – the reverse direction
of clockwise.

6. Costados – the couples occupying the


length of the ball when dancers are in square
formation (side pairs).
7. Crossed Arms – partners facing each
others or standing side by side join their Left
hands and right hand together either right
over left over right hands.

8. Cut – to displace quickly one foot with the


other.
9. Do – Si – Do – partners advance forward,
pass each other’s right side, step across to
the right move backward without turning
around, pass each other side to proper
places.

10. Free Foot – the foot not bearing the


weight of the body.
11. Free Hand – the hand not placed
anywhere or not doing anything.
12. Hayon – Hayon – to place one forearm in
front and the other at the back of the waist.

13. Hop – a spring from one foot landing on


the same foot in place or in any direction.
14. Inside Foot – the foot nearer the partner
when partners stand side by side.
15. Jump – a spring on foot or both feet
landing on both feet in any direction.

16. Jaleo– partners turn around clockwise


(with right elbows almost touching) or
counter clockwise (with left elbows touching)
using walking or any kind of dance steps.
17. Kumintang – moving the hand from the
wrist either in clockwise or counter clockwise
direction.

18. Leap – a spring from one foot landing on


the other foot in place or in any direction.
19. Outside Foot – the foot away from one’s
partner stand side by side.
20. Outside Hand – the hand away from
one’s partner stand side by side.

21. Place – a foot in a certain position


without putting weight on it; the side of the
foot rest on the floor.
22. Pivot – to turn with the ball, heel or
whole foot or affixed placed or point.
23. Point – to touch the floor highly with the
toes of one foot, weight on the other foot.

24. Salok – swinging the arm downward –


upward passing in front of the body as if
scooping; the trunk is bent forward f0llowing
the movement of the arm doing the “salok”.
25. Saludo – partners with the feet together
bow to each other, to the audience, opposite
dancers, or the neighbors.

28. Slide – to glide foot smoothly along the


floor.
29. Stamp – to bring the foot forcibly and
noisily on the floor.
30. Step – to advance or recede by moving
one foot to another resting place with a
complete transfer of weight from one foot to
the other foot.

26. Sarok – crossing the right foot in front of


the left bend the body slightly forward and
cross the hand down in front with the right
hand over the left.
27. Set – a dance formation like a square or a
unit formation composed of two or more
pairs.

31. Supporting foot – the foot that bears the


weight of the body.
32. Tap – to rap slightly with the ball or toe
of the free foot keeping weight of the body
on the other foot. There is no transfer of
weight.

33. Whirl – to make fast turns by executing


small steps in place, t right, or to left.
