Quarter 1 - Module 2:
Evaluating Functions
If L = 8cm and
W = 7cm
What is the area
of the figure?

A=LxW
= 8cm x 7cm
= 56cm2
What I Need to Know

After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. recall the process of substitution;

2. identify the various types of functions; and

3. evaluate functions.
Evaluating
Functions
is the process of determining the value
of the function at the number assigned
to a given variable. Just like in
evaluating algebraic expressions.
To evaluate function, you just need
to:
a.) replace each letter in the expression with
the assigned value and
b.) perform the operations in the expression
using the correct order of operations.
Example:
1. Given f (x) = 2x − 4 , find the value of the function if x = 3.
Solution:

f (x) = 2x − 4
✓ Substitute 3 for x in the
f (3) = 2(3) − 4
f (3) = 6 − 4 function.
f (3) = 2 ✓Simplify the expression
on
the right side of the
Example:
2. Given g(x) = 3x2 + 7 , find g(-3).
Solution:
g(x) = 3x2 + 7
g(-3) = 3(-3)2 + 7 ✓ Substitute -3 for x in
the function.
g(-3) = 3(9) + 7
g(-3) = 27 + 7 ✓ Simplify the
expression on the right
g(-3) = 34
side of the equation.

3. Given p(x) = 3x 2
+ 5x - 2, find p(0) and p(-1).
Solutions: Solutions:

p(x) = 3x2 + 5x - 2 p(x) = 3x2 + 5x - 2 Treat each of these

p(0) = 3(0)2 + 5(0) - 2 like two separate
p(0) = 0 + 0 - 2 p(-1) = 3(-1)2 + 5(-1) - 2 problems. In each
p(-1) = 3(1) - 5 - 2
p(0) = -2 case, you substitute
p(-1) = 3 - 5 - 2 the value for x and
p(-1) = 3 - 7 simplify. Start with x
p(-1) = -4 = 0, then x= -1.

4. Given f (x) = 5x +1, find f (h
e:
+1) .
f (x) = 5x +1
Solutions:
✓ This time, you substitute
f (h +1) = 5(h +1) +1 (h + 1) into the equation
f (h +1) = 5h + 5 +1 for x.

f (h +1) = 5h + 6 ✓ Use the distributive

property on the right side,
and then combine like
terms to simplify.
Example:

Solution:
  ✓ Substitute 9 for x in the
function.

  ✓ Simplify the expression on

the right side of the

equation.

✓ Substitute -5 for x in the
function.

✓ Simplify the expression on
  the right side of the
  equation. (recall the
concepts of integers and
-14
simplifying fractions)

e:

✓ Substitute 3/2 for x in the function.

✓ Simplify the expression on the right

side of the equation. (get the cubed of 2
  which is 8, then simplify)

Solution:

✓ Substitute 2.4 for x in the

function.
✓ Simplify the expression on the
h(2.4) = 2 + 2 right
h(2.4) = 4 side of the equation. (remember
that
in greatest integer function, value

Solution:
f (x) = |𝒙−8| ✓ Substitute 3 for x in the function.
f (3) = |3−8| ✓ Simplify the expression on the right
side of the equation. (remember that
f (3) = |-5| any number in the absolute value sign
f (3) = 5 is always positive).
