Virtual Work Method or Unit

Load Method
Subject: Structural Analysis

Presenter: Muhamad Fahad Ali (18CE62)

Objective
› To solve following problem:
Use the moment-area theorems and determine the slope at A and
displacement at C. EI is constant.
d
θA= ???

ΔC = ???

Moment area theorems shall be used to evaluate the requisite results

Virtual Work Method
This method is based on the
conservation of energy
principle, which states that the Ue = Ui
work done by all the external
forces acting on a structure,
We, is transformed into
internal work/strain energy, Wi.
Let’s illustrate this in detail.
I. First, applying a virtual unit load Pv = 1 at a point Q, it will create an internal virtual load f and will cause point Q to
displace by a certain small amount.

II. Then, placing the real external loads P1, P2, and M on the same body will cause an internal deformation, dS, and an external
deflection of point Q to Q’ by an amount ∆.
Let’s evaluate the external and internal works.
I. Internal work Wi ∴ Internal work done by the virtual load

II. External work We

∴ External work done by the unit load Pv
By Law of conservation of energy, External work done = Internal work done, therefore equate eq: (a) and (b)
Such that: = =
Virtual Work Method Here,
f = internal virtual load.
Deflection:
∆ = external displacement caused by real loads.
= dS = internal deformation caused by real loads.

Similarly, for slope:

Here,
Mv = 1 = external virtual unit moment.
f = = internal virtual load acting on an element in the direction of ds
θ = external rotational displacement caused by real loads.
ds = internal deformation caused by real loads

This was a general introduction. We will bit specific in coming slides.
