Antenna- An Introduction 4

 An Antenna converts electromagnetic radiation into

electric current, or vice versa.
 Need of Antenna :
 For transmission and reception of the radio signal.
 Antennas are required by any radio receiver or
transmitter to couple its electrical connection to the
electromagnetic field.

tenna length

Cell Phone Antennas

The wavelength of the received signal is the primary fac-
tor in the design and manufacture of Antennas. In fact,
all antennas can receive any electromagnetic signal re-
gardless of its wavelength, but the received signal is
very weak if the antenna is not proportional to the re-
ceived wavelength.
Types of Antennas used in Cell 6

Phones
Following are some of the antennas used in cellular phones:

 External Antennas

 Retractable Monopole (whips) antennas

 Helical antennas

 Internal Antennas

 Microstrip antennas (MSA)

 Planar inverted-F antennas (PIFA)

Dipole Antenna 7

 It must be designed so that its length is equal to at least half the

wavelength of the received signal. The wavelength is calculated by
dividing the speed of light by the frequency of the received signal, since
all electromagnetic waves propagate in a vacuum at the speed of light.

 Internal antenna: The antenna is embedded inside the
phone which is not visible to us.
Microstrip antennas (MSA) 9

. Which indicates that the waveform refers to the waveform,

which indicates that its wave is a wave of small scale.
It is printed on the electronic board of the mobile.
