BRIEF HISTORY OF ISLAM
ISLAM

The term "Islam" originated from an Arabic word


meaning:
• To Submit
• Surrender
• Submit oneself for the obedience of God
• Enter into a condition of peace and security with
God through allegiance and surrender to him

On the other hand, the word "Muslim" is the Arabic


word for a person who "submits" .
ISLAM
• Established around 7th Century C.E and began with the Arabian
desert people
• Pre-Islamic people worshipped variety of gods. Carved images
were done to represent these gods that were often revered and
given blood sacrifices.
• Islam is the youngest among the world's major religions.
• Majority of Muslims live in Asia and Africa.
• More than 60% of the world's Muslims can be found in
Asia ,including Indonesia with the population of almost 87% of
Muslim adherents, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Turkey, and Iran.
MUHAMMAD IBN ABDULLAH

Muhammad ibn Abdullah was an Arab


religious, social, and political leader and
the founder of the world religion of Islam.
According to Islamic doctrine, he was a
prophet divinely inspired to preach and
confirm the monotheistic teachings of
Adam, Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and other
prophets.

5 PILLARS OF ISLAM
• Profession of Faith or The Creed(shahada). The belief that "There
is no god but God, and Muhammad is the Messenger of God" is
central to Islam. This phrase, written in Arabic, is often prominently
featured in architecture and a range of objects, including
the Qur'an, Islam's holy book of divine revelations. One becomes a
Muslim by reciting this phrase with conviction.
• Obligatory Prayer (salat). Muslims pray facing Mecca five times a
day: at dawn, noon, mid-afternoon, sunset, and after dark. 
• Alms / Poor tax (zakat). In accordance with Islamic law, Muslims
donate a fixed portion of their income to community members in
need.

• Fasting (sawm). During the daylight hours of Ramadan, the
ninth month of the Islamic calendar, all healthy adult Muslims
are required to abstain from food and drink.
• Pilgrimage to Mecca(hajj). Every Muslim whose health and
finances permit it must make at least one visit to the holy city of
Mecca, in present-day Saudi Arabia.

Islamic Festivals
· Eid al-Adha or the Feast of Sacrifice, is celebrated by Muslims all over the world as a
major holiday for a period of three to fours days. It's different from Eid al-Fitr marks the end
of the fast and is the one day when Muslims are not allowed to fast
· Ramadan, Arabic Ramaḍān, in Islam, the ninth month of the Muslim calendar and the holy
month of fasting. It begins and ends with the appearance of the crescent moon.

The five pillars – the declaration of faith


(shahada), prayer (salah), alms-giving
(zakat), fasting (sawm) and pilgrimage
(hajj) – constitute the basic norms of
Islamic practice. They are accepted by
Muslims globally irrespective of ethnic,
regional or sectarian differences.
Polygamy in Islamic Religion
• Polygamy is permitted for many social reasons. However it is by
permission and not an obligation or recommendation in the Quran
that a Muslim male should indulge in polygamy. at the time of the
Prophet Mohamed (Peace upon Him) it was because thousands of
Muslim men died in wars
• Muslim supporters of polygamy often cite Quran verse 4:3, which
instructs men to take as many wives as they can take care of, up to
four, and they also point out that the Prophet Muhammad had
multiple wives
• Muslim societies allow for up to four wives, but not without specific
rules and regulations.
•The Islamic Calendar is composed of 12 lunar months of between 29 and 30
days. A year in the Islamic calendar constitutes a total of 354 days. The
difference between the solar and the lunar calendar is adjusted by adding one
day to the last month of the year 11 times each 30 years.

• Islam and Women - women in Islam must

term, jihad means effort or struggle to convince
unbelievers to pursue the Muslim way of life.

Muhammad.
• Migration- their population in the US and
Europe contimues to rise in the present century.
Muslim immigrants and their American-born
children number about 4 million in total.
