Let’s Learn Together

*Materials that Absorb and Do not

Absorb Water

*Materials that Float or Sink

*Materials that Undergo Decay

Materials that Absorb and Do
not Absorb Water

Porous materials are

materials having small
holes that allow air or
liquid to pass through.
These materials absorb
water.
Materials that Absorb and Do
not Absorb Water

Non-porous materials
are materials that do not
allow water to pass
through. They do not
absorb water.
Materials that Float or Sink
Some materials float on
water and some materials
sink. Float means to stay
above the surface of the
water. Sink means to go
below the surface of the
water.
Materials that Float or Sink
Objects with tightly packed
molecules will sink if they are
denser than the liquid.
Materials that Float or Sink
Objects with loosely packed
molecules will float if they
are less dense than liquid.
Factors Affecting Sinking or
Floating of Objects
✔ The material it is made of
✔ Weight of an object
✔ Shape of form of an object
✔ Type of liquid
✔ Density or compactness of an
object
Factors Affecting Sinking or
Floating of Objects
Buoyancy is the tendency of an object to float in
liquid.
Density is the degree of compactness of an
object.
Upthrust is the force that
pushes an object up in a
liquid.
Factors Affecting Sinking or
Floating of Objects

✔ Some things float on top of water, some things submerged

partway down, and some things sink.

✔ An object’s shape can affect its ability to float, but some

materials float no matter what their shape such as
Styrofoam and balsa wood.

✔ Some things float at first, but then sink as they absorb

water.
Materials that Undergo Decay
Decay means to be
slowly destroyed into
bits in the presence of
water, air, soil, and
action of
microorganisms.
Signs of Decay
✔ has molds
✔ foul odor
✔ worms
✔ bubbles are forming
✔ bulging canned
goods
The following are materials commonly found at home. Write A on the
blank if the material absorbs water and DA if it does not absorb water.
water container styro cap
cotton

_______________ bath towel

metal spoon

_______________ _______________
Identify the materials in each item. Write S on the space if the material
sinks in water and F if the material floats on water.
metal spoon bowling ball
beach ball

Put a check mark (/) if the materials will undergo decay and mark (x) if
not.
