Lesson 2A

Using keyboard and

mouse
What is a keyboard?
 One of the first peripherals to be used with computers
 Primary input device for entering text & numbers
 Keyboard Skill is called keyboarding
 The keyboard allows the computer user to enter words, numbers,
punctuation, symbols, and special function commands into the
computer’s memory.
STANDARD KEYBOARD
LAYOUT
 A standard keyboard has about 100 keys arranged in five
groups
 Each key sends a different signal to the CPU
 Extended Keyboard layout (Typically 101/105 keys )
 IBM Enhanced Keyboard layout (QWERTY)
Different types of keys

 Alphanumeric Keys
 Function keys
 Modifier keys
 Cursor movement keys
 Numeric keypad
 Special purpose keys
Different types of keys
HOW A KEYBOARD WORKS
How keyboard inputs data

 Keyboard Controller detects a key press

 Keyboard Controller places a code into part of its
memory (Keyboard Buffer)
 The Keyboard controller then sends signal to the
computer’s system software
 System Software responds to the interrupt by
reading the scan code from keyboard buffer
 The system software passes the scan code to CPU
WHAT IS A MOUSE?

 The mouse is a pointing device.

 A mouse is a pointing device that you can move around on a
flat surface and controls the pointer.
 The pointer is an on screen object usually an arrow.
 The mouse can be used to select text, issue commands, draw,
and perform other types of input tasks.
The Mouse
 Mechanical mouse  Optical mouse
 Small Rubber ball  Light shown onto mouse pad
determines direction and  Reflection determines speed
speed and direction
 The ball often requires  Requires little maintenance
cleaning
The Mouse

 Benefits
 Pointer positioning is fast
 Menu interaction is easy
 Users can draw electronically
Uses of the mouse

 Pointing
 Clicking
 Double-clicking
 Dragging
 Right-clicking
 Scrolling
VARIANTS OF THE MOUSE
 Trackballs  Track pads
 Upside down mouse  Stationary pointing device
 Hand rests on the ball  Small plastic rectangle
 User moves the ball  Finger moves across the
 pad
Uses little desk space
 Pointer moves with the
pointer
 Popular on laptops
Ergonomics and Input Devices

 Ergonomics
 Study of human and tool interaction
 Concerned with physical interaction
 Attempts to improve safety and comfort
Ergonomics and Input Devices

 Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI)

 Caused by continuous misuse of the body
 Many professions suffer from RSI

 Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

 Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a wrist or hand injury caused by
using a keyboard for long periods of time.
 Carpal tunnel is a passage in the wrist through which nerves
pass
Ergonomics and Input Devices

 Office hardware suggestions

 Office chairs should have
 Adjustable armrests and height
 Armrests
 Lower back support
 Desks should have
 Have a keyboard tray
 Keep hands at keyboard height
 Place the monitor at eye level
Ergonomics and Input Devices
Techniques to avoid RSI
Use a padded wrist support.
Keep your wrists straight.
Sit up straight.
Learn to type.
Take frequent breaks.
Use ergonomic keyboard
