RENEWABLE ENERGY
Using a country specific approach describe how can Renewable
Energy benefit Enterprise Development?

OBJECTIVES

WHAT IS RENEWABLE ENERGY?

1
Renewable energy is energy that is collected
from renewable resources that are naturally
replenished on a human timescale.
TYPES OF RENEWABLE ENERGY

2
The major types or sources of renewable energy
are:
1. Solar energy from the sun
2. Geothermal energy from heat inside the earth
3. Wind energy
4. Biomass from plants
5. Hydropower from flowing water
They are called renewable energy sources
because they are naturally replenished. Day
after day, the sun shines, plants grow, the wind
blows, and rivers flow.

Improves sustainability
Reducing the environmental impact of your business will improve the
sustainability of your business. If you are less dependent on natural
resources than your competitors and have ways to deal with rising costs
due to climate change, your business will have a greater chance of long-
term success.
Foster productivity among employees
Customers aren't the only ones who want the businesses they support to
become more environmentally conscious. Employees are also choosing to
work for businesses that are actively working to reduce their carbon
emissions. In fact, more than half of all workers state that contributing to
the planet's health is an essential element of their ideal job.
WHY SHOULD A BUSINESS BE
ENVIRONMENTALLY AWARE?
By working for businesses that are making moves towards sustainability,
employees can increase the positive impact they have on the environment. This
gives their job even greater importance. When employees feel passionate about the
work they're doing, it shows. A study found that companies that promote
environmental consciousness and implement sustainable practices have 55% better
morale among staff members, as well as 38% better employee loyalty.
Save your business money
One of the most effective ways to reduce your business's carbon footprint is by
introducing energy-efficient equipment into your workspace by going green.
Research shows that 35% of small businesses name energy costs as one of their
top business expenses. But with energy-efficient products constantly being
developed, lowering these costs is possible and is environmentally conscious.
WHY SHOULD A BUSINESS BE
ENVIRONMENTALLY AWARE?
Help protect the community you serve
Climate change affects everyone, including the community you serve. By becoming
more environmentally conscious, your business not only helps mitigate climate change
on a global scale but also on a local one.Your eco-friendly efforts directly impact the
neighbors your business relies on, so you can help give them less polluted air, cleaner
water, and a more sustainable future. For example,Nauticus, a leading maritime and
science discovery center in Norfolk,Virginia, held a virtual clean-up day. Those who
recorded themselves cleaning up parks, the beach, or their local community were
rewarded with reduced admission rates. Not only does this event inspire volunteers to
continue to beautify their community, but it helps protect their local environment. Any
small business can join these efforts by planning their own donation drive or community
clean-up and offering volunteers discounts on products or services.
COLARDO’S APPROACH TO
RENEWABLE ENERGY AND

ENTERPRISE DEVELOPMENT
The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is a leader in
developing renewable energy and energy efficiency
technologies and practices. NREL also advances related science
and engineering; and transfers knowledge and innovations to
address the nation’s energy and environmental goals. This
includes working with the investment community, industry
partners, utilities, state regulatory agencies, and other economic
development organizations to make sure that renewable energy
technologies reach the marketplace as quickly as possible.
COLARDO’S APPROACH TO RENEWABLE ENERGY AND
ENTERPRISE DEVELOPMENT
NREL has built an innovative Enterprise Development Program. The
program focuses on empowering the entrepreneur with critical business
development support and partnering opportunities that will stimulate the
formation of market-focused clean energy business start-ups that can
attract capital and additional strategic partners to the clean energy
market, as well as create job opportunities that lead to economic
development. In particular, NREL's Enterprise Development Program
provides clean energy entrepreneurs with the opportunity to take
advantage of a variety of events, online tools, business incubation
support, and access to NREL’s research and other strategic partnerships.
Connecting Entrepreneurs with Investors, Strategic Partners, and Business
Expertise
•NREL Industry Growth "Venture" Forums are similar to a venture capital forum and provide clean
energy entrepreneurs an opportunity to present their business cases to an expert panel of
investors and energy executives.
•The Colorado Clean Tech Initiative (CCI), in which NREL sponsors and participates, is a monthly
networking and business development venue to help promote economic development in Colorado.
The CCI is designed to help build a Colorado clean energy technology cluster through a robust
business network. The network includes successful, serial business entrepreneurial companies, as
well as development professionals that go beyond business mentors, including a wide range of
investors (including numerous angel groups), and other key participants such as marketing
experts. In addition, CCI provides access to virtual and traditional incubation services.
Connecting Entrepreneurs with Investors, Strategic Partners, and Business
Expertise
•The Clean Energy Investor Directory contains contact and profile
information for around 100 investors that are currently interested in
clean energy technology businesses. All interested investors with
individual access to capital resources are welcome to sign up
(includes angel collaborative; not intended for brokers).
•The Clean Energy Alliance is an alliance of the nation's top
incubators committed to incubating and providing
business services to clean energy entrepreneurs. NREL works in
partnership with this elite group of clean energy business
incubators to help foster the growth of robust clean energy
businesses and the commercialization of their respective
technologies.
