Method SHA (Systematic Handling Analysis)

Definition

It is a set of six procedures that

can be applied to small projects
that do not require an in-depth
analysis of the material handling
system.
Procedure

1. Classify information

2. Analyze information

3. Visualize flow

4. Establish plans

5. Evaluate alternatives

6. Detail and install

KEY FEATURES

To carry out the procedure it is necessary to analyze the input data, i.e., the preliminary
information needed to perform the analysis of the material handling problems, in
which the key elements are:

- Product or materials (P; Parts, units, items)

- Quantities (Q; Sales, contracted volumes)
• Routing (R; Sequence of operations and process
requirements)
- Support Services (S; Maintenance, order processing,
inventory control)
- Time Time (T; Rates and operational times)
PHASES
PHASE I: External integration
In this phase, all movements and transfers from the area in question to the outside
should be examined, preparing for the next phase, the movements within the area to
design the material handling.

PHASE II: General handling plan

The method of material movements between areas should be planned. Decisions
should be made regarding the systems, types of equipment and containers to be used in
the proposed handling.
PHASE III: Detailed management plan
The method of movement of materials in each area must be planned, both in its
internal movement and in its relationship with other areas between workplaces and control
points.
PHASE IV: Installation
Plans, drawings and specifications for obtaining and installing the equipment, training
of workers, and follow-up on every detail must be carried out. These phases allow to
locate in time and space the progress of the development of the material handling model,
and will be used to follow up and plan that will be carried out.

PROCEDURE

CLASSIFICATION OF MATERIALS

The analysis that a maintenance plan must perform begins with the classification of
materials based on their physical characteristics and their quantities, times or special control
requirements.

A product-quantity analysis is performed, grouping the items or materials in order of the

magnitude of their handling, thus allowing the identification of problem materials and
establishing the focus on the actions to be taken in each case.
MOVEMENT ANALYSIS

It is the determination of the number of movements required in each route and relates
materials to movements using the same measure.

What should be done?

-Determine the unit of material to be moved (tons, barrels, pallets....)

-Identify the routes defined by the loading and unloading points.
For each type of material note for each route the amount of material to be moved.
VISUALIZE MOVEMENTS

What is done?

-Make or get a layout plan of the facility.

-Build a process flow diagram on the floor plan where

the shape of the line indicates the flow intensity.

-Mark the type of material in each flow line.

PLAN AND ADJUST

At this stage the most appropriate types of management methods are considered and those
that have the highest probability of being effective are taken.
For each class and each route determine the best management method.

Example: GENERAL EQUIPMENT SELECTION GUIDE

Short distance with little quantity
-Use simple handling equipment
Long distances with small quantity
-Use simple conveying equipment
Short distances with large quantity
-Use complex handling equipment
Long distances with large quantity
-Uses complex conveying equipment
EVALUATION OF ALTERNATIVES EVALUATION

The goal is to select the most appropriate management plan based on cost and
intangible factors.

What to do?

-Identify each alternative

-Obtain cost and investment data from each equipment supplier.
-Prepare a comparison of alternatives sheet.
Make a comparison of intangible benefits and risks of each alternative
SELECT THE PLAN AND INSTALL IT

The goal is to ensure that all details have been covered: plan, equipment and
installation.

What to do?
-Make a list of all aspects that need to be accomplished for implementation.
List tasks on a schedule sheet (equipment specifications, tasks to provide
equipment, installation drawings, training needs, verification of effective use).
-Assign responsibilities per task
-Schedule each task
-Establish means of monitoring progress
