Urban Trends
• How is the world’s urban population changing?
Over half the world’s population now lives in cities. By 2030, it is expected that 60 per
cent of the world’s population will live in urban areas, and by 2050 it will be 70 per cent.
This process is known as urbanisation.

GRAPHICAL SKILLS
“You will spend much time learning geographical
skills throughout the year. These skills are best learnt
when seeing them in a real setting!”
There are lower rates of urbanisation in richer, high income countries (HICs) in Europe,
North America and Oceania. In these countries, urbanisation has slowed down as the
majority of the population already live, in cities.
The urban population is ageing, so the rate of natural increase has also slowed down. One
exception to this pattern is South America, with many newly emerging economies (NEEs)
like Brazil. Here, urbanisation happened earlier and has slowed down, even though these
countries are not yet among the richer, high-income countries.
