OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, student are
expected to;
• Understand the culture, traditions,
beliefs, and practices of Subanen tribe or
people.
Subanen
• Suba, means river
• Subanen are
called “The
People of the
River”
Subanen
• They are mostly
found in the
northern, western
and southern
portions of the
Zamboanga
peninsular.
Religious Beliefs
• The subanen sticks
to their ancient
polytheistic religion.
• Witchdoctor or
shaman plays an
important role in
their community.

Costumes
• Upper garments: sub
• Lower garments:
salwal/sandyawa
1. Binungis/purol (short pants)
2. Pinusuan/kinantilyo (long
pants)
• Headress: tulapok/mamandyo
• Bracelet: glang
• Anklet: sing’l
• Necklace: bitak

used during the wedding)

Marital Practices
• They practice buya
(parentally-arrange marriage)
• Celebrated at women’s
house
• The Gbaylan (priest) and
Datu officiates the wedding.
• The groom’s right hand and
foot are placed on the brides

chicken and
showering its blood
to the couples hand
and feet.
• Drinking of pangasi
in a porcelain bowl
Family Practices
• Extended Family-
parents allowed their
married children to
stay with them until
they are ready to be
independent.
• They practice
polygamy

• Datu- Supreme
ruler, the center of
leadership
• Timuay- Head of
the village, or leader
of the village.
Baptism
• The ritual is called daga
• Child is placed at the center
of the house together with
the priest
• Family forms a circle
• Chicken is killed to smear
with the blood in the child’s
hand and feet
• Child is lifted
• Success and happiness are
sung
