THE

FRUITS
AND
VEGETAB
LES
FRUITS AND VEGETABLES
- Fruits and vegetables are classified
depending on which part of the plant
they come from. A fruit develops from
the flower of a plant, while the other
parts of the plant are categorized as
vegetables. Fruits contain seeds, while
vegetables can consist of roots, stems
and leaves.
WHAT IS FRUIT?
- Fruits are the reproductive organs produced by
flowering plants that contain seeds. So a fruit is
basically an enlarged ovary that develops after the
flower has been pollinated. The seeds develop and
the extraneous parts of the flower drop off, leaving
the immature fruit which gradually ripens. Then we
eat it. This description encompasses nuts as well as
many fruits previously (even currently) referred to
as vegetables– like tomatoes.
WHAT IS VEGETABLES?
Vegetable is the edible portion of a plant.
Vegetables are usually grouped according to the
portion of the plant that is eaten such as
leaves (lettuce), stem (celery), roots (carrot),
tubers (potato), bulbs (onion) and flowers (broccoli).

Vegetables are the leaves, stems, roots, or other

parts of certain plants that people eat. Vegetables usually come from herbaceous
plants. Herbaceous plants have stems that are softer than the woody
stems of bushes and trees. Many vegetables grow aboveground.
WHAT ARE THE
NUTRITIVE VALUE AND
SELECTION OF FRUITS
AND VEGETABLES?
What is meant by nutritive value?
Nutritional value or nutritive value as part of food quality is the measure of a well-balanced ratio
of the essential nutrients carbohydrates, fat, protein, minerals, and vitamins in items of food or
diet concerning the nutrient requirements of their consumer.
Most fruit is naturally
low in fat, sodium,
and calories and a
source of many
essential nutrients
such as
potassium, vitamins
A and C, folate, and
dietary fiber.
Generally, vegetables
are rich sources of
minerals- especially
calcium and iron, and
vitamins A and C. while
nearly all
classes of vegetables are
adequate as antioxidants
and dietary fiber [2].
SELECTION OF
FRUITS AND
VEGETABLES
When shopping for vegetables, key factors are firmness and color. Choose those
that are as firm or crisp as possible and consistent in coloring. Unlike fruit, smell
doesn't play a big factor in a vegetable's freshness, although anything that smells
overly sweet or sour is likely passed its prime.
A diet rich in vegetables and fruits can lower blood pressure, reduce the risk of heart
disease and stroke, prevent some types of cancer, lower risk of eye and digestive
problems, and have a positive effect upon blood sugar, which can help keep appetite
in check.
