SETS
Definition- A Set is a well defined collection of
objects
Representation Of Sets
Example: a set of vowels

Set builder form V={x , x is a vowel in English Alphabet}

Roster form V= {a,e,i,o,u}
Types of Sets
• Empty sets – A set which does not contain any element is called an
empty or void set . Example- A :{x , x is a real root of equation x^2+1}

• Singleton sets- A set which contains only a single element . Example-
A:{x, x is an even prime number}

• Equal sets – Two sets a and b are said to be equal if every element of a
is in b and vice versa. Example- A:{1,2,3,4} , B: {2,3,4,1}

• Equivalent sets - Sets with same number of elements are called

equivalent sets. Example- a={a,e,I,o,u} b= { 1,2,3,4,5}
UNION OF INTERSECTION
SETS OF SETS
It is the set of all those It is the set to all those elements which
elements which are either in A or in are common to both set A and B
B Example- A: { 1,2,3} B:{ 2,4,5} A
Ո B:{2}
Example- A:{ 1,2,3,4} B: {1,2,b,c}
A U B : {1,2,3,4,b,c}
Properties of Intersection
• A Ո B= B Ո A
Properties of Union
• A U B =B U A • (A Ո B) Ո C = A Ո (B Ո C)
• (A U B) U C= A U (B U C) • Φ Ո A= Φ
• AU Φ = A • AՈA=A
• A U A= A
DIFFERENCE COMPLIMENT
OF SETS OF
It is the set of elements which
belong to A to but not to B SETS
Set of all the elements that are not
EXAMPLE – A:{1,2,3} B: in A
{2,5,4} A-B: {1,3}
NOTE – A-B is not equal B-A EXAMPLE- V:{ A,E,I,O,U}
V’: {x : x is a consonant}
NOTE - A U A’=U
