NATO and New

Zealand
By Raúl Santiago Sánchez
• Formed in 1949 with the signing of the Washington Treaty, NATO is a security
alliance of 30 countries from North America and Europe. NATO's fundamental
goal is to safeguard the Allies' freedom and security by political and military
means.
• The North Atlantic Treaty Organization, also called the North Atlantic Alliance,
is an intergovernmental military alliance between 30 member states – 28
European and two North American. Established in the aftermath of World War
II, the organization implements the North Atlantic Treaty, which was signed in

NATO Washington, D.C., on 4 April 1949.[3][4] NATO is a system of collective

security: its independent member states agree to defend each other against
attacks by third parties. During the Cold War, NATO operated as a check on
the perceived threat posed by the Soviet Union. The alliance remained in
place after the dissolution of the Soviet Union and has been involved in
military operations in the Balkans, the Middle East, South Asia, and Africa.
• Australia IS NOT part of the NATO, but it supports global problems such as
the war between Rusia and Ukraine
New Zealand
• New Zealand is a country in the southwestern Pacific
Ocean, comprising two main islands, both marked by
volcanoes and glaciation. In the capital, Wellington,
on the North Island, is the extensive national museum
Te Papa Tongarewa. Wellington's impressive Mount
Victoria, along with Fiordland and Southern Lakes in
the South Island, represented mythical Middle-earth
in Peter Jackson's "The Lord of the Rings" saga.
• Traditionally, New Zealand has been a member of the
United Nations and has a long history of contributing
to a range of United Nations peacekeeping
operations. It’s a partner of the North Atlantic Treaty
Organisation (NATO).
