SYMMETRIC

STRUCTURES
DEVELOPED BY USING THE
CONCEPT OF REFLECTION

SYMMETRY
SYMMETRY
● Consider a structure located in the xy plane, as shown
in Fig. 10.1(a)
● Fig. 10.1(b) is the reflection about the y-axis and Fig.
10.1(c) is the reflection about the x-axis.
● Notice at point D of the structure when reflected about
y-axis, the coordinates became (-x1, y1) from (x1, y1) in
the original structure. While for the reflection over x-
axis, it became (x1, -y1) .
We realize that the reflection of a structure
about an arbitrary s axis can be obtained by
rotating the structure through 180˚ about the
s axis. Alternatively, the structure’s
reflection can be obtained by joining the
reflections of its various joints and/or ends,
which are determined by changing the signs
of their coordinates in the direction
perpendicular to the s axis.

SYMMETRY
A plane structure is considered to be
symmetric with respect to an axis of
symmetry in its plane if the reflection
of the structure about the axis is
identical in geometry, supports, and
material properties to the structure
itself.

EXAMPLES
ANALYSIS OF SYMMETRIC STRUCTURES

● A structure can be considered to

be symmetric for the purpose of
an analysis if its structural
properties that have an effect on
the results of the analysis are
symmetric.
ANALYSIS OF SYMMETRIC STRUCTURES

● Supports violate symmetry

● hinged support at A and roller support
at C
● the truss can be considered to be
symmetric when subjected to vertical
loads only, since Ax=0.
● truss cannot beconsidered to be
symmetric when subjected to any
horizontal loads
