Use of “will” for predictions


First conditional sentences

I will look for a job immediately after I finish the university.

My next weekend will be very relaxing. I´ll be at the beach.

I’ll see you at the college tomorrow. Bye!

It seems that the economic situation will not improve very soon.
Analysts say that 2023 won’t be a good year, as regards the economic situation.

Will you go somewhere next summer or will you stay at home?


I’ll stay at home. I probably won’t have any money.

Will you visit your grandma before this summer vacation?


Yes, I will. I can’t wait to see her.
No, I won’t. I’ll go there after the summer.

will = ‘ll will not = won’t


“will” for predictions.

The future tense can also be used to make predictions.

Here are some common phrases that are often used to make predictions:

think + will I think I will receive my degree in four years.

not think + will She does not think she’ll get a good mark in the test.

bet + will / won’t I bet you will be accepted for the new position at work.

be sure + will / won’t She’s sure his nephew won’t study to be an engineer as his dad.

know + will / won’t I know you will pass the subject.

For example:

You hear: This weekend is Halloween, and I don’t have a costume yet.
Your prediction: I’m sure he’ll find one in a store.

Murphy’s law: “If something can go wrong…… it will go wrong!”

Who was Murphy? What’s his law?

How can you express a Murphy’s law gramatically correct?

Some more examples:

“WOULD”

A: I would like to work in a big company when I finish my studies.


What about you? What would you like to do?

B: I wouldn’t work for a big company, I’d like to be an independent worker.

A: That would be great!

would = ‘d would not = wouldn’t


…if a large aggressive dog ran towards you?

a) I would shout “DOWN” at it several times.


What would you do….. b) I would put my hands in my pocket and walk slowly backwards.
c) I would keep completely still and look at it in its eyes.

…if a poisonous snake bit you on the leg and you were more than
30 minutes from the nearest town?

a) I would put something very cold on it.


b) I would suck the bite to get the poison out.

free time, but now he doesn’t have enough time. 2. He lives in a dormitory with his
roommate Gerald, but he doesn’t like Gerald very much. His friend Kevin is much
more fun. 3. Lately, Edward has noticed a pretty French girl on campus, but he’s
too nervous to talk to her because he doesn’t pronounce French words very well.
4. He hasn’t finished his final paper because he doesn’t know what to write about.
5. He wanted to talk to his professor, but the professor’s office hours have ended,
and he is gone for the day.
