3. If the reporting verb is in Present or Future
tense, the verb tense in reported speech is not
changed.
Direct speech
Jennie says, “I’m present!”
Reported speech
Jennie says that she is present.

If reported speech expresses universal truth or
habitual fact, the verb tense in the reported
speech is not changed.

Kim said, “I did this assignment yesterday.”
Reported speech
Kim said that he had done that assignment the day before.

rules TO FOLLOW IN CHANGING
DIRECT SPEECH TO REPORTED
SPEECH.
1. Remove comma and the quotation marks then
add “that” after reporting verb
2. Change in pronoun
3. Change in verb tense
4. Change in situations
Yes/no questions
For yes/no questions, add “if or whether” instead of “that”
and change the position of the verb and the noun/pronoun.
