SAFETY CONSIDERATION
INTRODUCTION TO
CLOSED CIRCUIT TELEVISION (CCTV)
USES OF CCTV
Maintaining perimeter security in medium- to high-secure areas and
installations.
Observing behaviour of imprisoned inmates and potentially dangerous
patients in medical facilities.
Traffic monitoring.
Overseeing locations that would be hazardous to a human, for
example, highly radioactive or toxic industrial environments or Nuclear
Power Plant Facilities.
Building and grounds security.
Obtaining a visual record of activities in situations where it is necessary
to maintain proper security or access controls (for example, in banks,
casinos, or airports and Military Camps and Prison Facilities) .

Connectivity type
CCTV cameras may employ one of two types of data transmission:
Analog Cameras – a traditional camera used in CCTV systems. It
sends video over cable to VCRs or DVRs. Analog cameras have
options for high resolution, making them applicable for various
surveillance needs. These cameras also have some cyber
security advantages because of the coaxial cable they are
connected with would require physical access to breach.
Digital Cameras - These cameras do not require a video capture
card because they work using a digital signal which can be saved
directly to a computer, maybe connected via UTP/STP cable or
USB eg: webcam

CCTV Components
Cameras - The image capturing device on the cctv system. Camera
can be dome, bullet and PTZ type.
DVR – Digital Video Recorder – The recording device of the images
capture by the cameras. Capacity of the DVR is based on the
number of cameras it can support and the hard disk size.
Monitor – The monitor is where we can view the live and recorded
images from the DVR. Many options on the sizes of the screen like
21, 25, 42 and 50 inches monitor can be use.
CCTV video cables - Cables that connect the camera to the DVR
for live view and recording. Cable types like RG59 and RG6 are
used.

Wired Transmission
• Wired CCTV systems use cables to connect cameras to other CCTV
components. Wired transmission can provide good quality video
images with fewer instances of interference because cables are
shielded. Cameras can be located far away from recording or
monitoring equipment. Three types of wired CCTV systems are
commonly used today: coaxial cables, UTP/ STP cables, and fiber optic
cables. Transmission over a public telephone network is not advisable
for CCTV transmission due to the cyber security issues related to an
open network; however, it is still used in some CCTV environments.

Coaxial Cable
• Coaxial cable is the most common method of transmitting video
signals from the camera to the monitor or other CCTV
components. Coaxial cable consists of a single wire surrounded
first by a nonconductive insulating layer (dielectric), then by a
braided wire shield, and finally a plastic or rubber covering. Note
that CCTV applications require cable of the highest quality
materials and manufacture. Both the center conductor and the
braided shield must be copper. Aluminum foil-wrap shield, which is
used in some consumer cable applications, does not meet CCTV
requirements.

34
• Premade Siamese Cable - plug and play cable for use with security
cameras and is suitable for use with analog security cameras. At CCTV
Camera World it can carry lengths of up to 150ft for premade security
cable, and are also varieties which carry audio, video, and power.
• Coax Siamese Cable Spool - professional cable for CCTV use with
analog or Digital cameras. This cable is sometimes also called Bulk Cable
and requires tipping the wire with BNC connectors and DC Power
Terminal Connectors by the installer. Available in RG59U cable rolls of
500ft or 1000ft. RG59U Siamese Cable comes in two quality types: SCC
or Solid Copper Conductor.
35
36
Category 5 Cable
• Networks transmit video over Category 5 cable. The cable consists of
four pairs of UTP 24-gauge copper wire with three twists per inch. The
high number of twists per inch reduces the “crosstalk,” or EMI,
between signals passing on the strands of the cable. Category 5 cables
can be used to carry frequencies of up to 100 megahertz (MHz) and
handle data rates up to 1,000 megabits per second (Mbps). The cables
are terminated with an RJ45 connector and must meet the Electronics
Industry Alliance/Technology Industry Association 568 Commercial
Building Telecommunications wiring standard.
37
38
Wireless Transmission
• Wireless options for transmitting video can be advantageous due to
ease of installation, lack of cabling requirements, and assured
mobility. There are some disadvantages of wireless systems such as
the need for a dedicated frequency to transmit signals, signal
interruptions, and signal interference. There are also increasing
concerns over cyber security and the need for information assurance
hardening.
