Maya Angelou


Maya Angelou was an African American
writer, poet, actress, singer, and civil right
activist.


She was born in 1928, and her death was in
2014 at the age of 86 years old.


Angelou’s works include autobiographies,
plays, poetic, and television producer.


She was best known for her series seven
autobiographies.


Her seven autobiographies focus on her
childhood and early adult experiences.

 I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings is an
autobiographical work written by Maya Angelou. She
published it in 1969, and it was published by Random
House in 19970.

I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings is the first one from
seven autobiographies books of Maya Angelou.

The major theme in her autobiography is racism. It is


represented the works of African American women and
how Blacks suffered in America.

Maya’s novel I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings tells


the story of the caged bird whose song is protest.
Angelou compared her life to the caged bird who had a
powerful rule of hope.
2. Research Problem
 The main problem in this research is “How racism reflected
in Maya Angelou’s novel I Know Why the Caged Bird
Sings?”.

 How Maya faced the problem of racism during her life and
how African American people suffered from Whites in
American land.

 Also, how Maya changed herself from the victim of racism


and fought for her rights in American soil.
Aims and Objectives of this Study .3
 This study aims to analyze and resolve the element of
racism in Maya’s autobiographical novel I Know
Why the Caged Bird Sings.

 Also, this research aims to discuss the difficulties


that Angelou faced in American society.

 However, the objective of this research aims to


resolve the novel through Marxist theory.
4. Hypothesis
 I conclude from this study, that racism in Maya
Angelou’s novel I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings
is the important issue which reflected in her life.

 To find out the theme of racism in Maya’s life, we


can read her autobiography novel which describes
her childhood and earliest young experiences toward
racism in America.

 Through the story of Angelou in Stamps we can


figure out her suffering from white people. Also, her
grandmother Momma was the victim of racism.
5. Purpose of the Study

 The theoretical purpose of this study gives support to the


major body of knowledge particularly in I Know Why the
Caged Bird Sings.

 The functional purpose gives deeper understanding in literary


area in resolving this novel into different point of views.

 In my point of view this study is important, because it tells


people a good lesson of racism.
6. Methodology
This research method consists:
 Type of study: It applies specific research

 Data and data sources. The data in this research is text including of
phrases, quotations, words, sentences.

 Data sources in this research are:


1.Main data source: Maya’s novel I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.
2. Minor data sources: are taken from references and articles related to
the study by both internet and books.

 This study also applies the theory of Marxist to analyze the element of
racism in Maya’s novel I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.
7. Chapterization Scheme
This research includes four chapters:
 First chapter includes introduction which covers:
1. Background of the study
2. Research Problem
3. Amis and Objectives of the study, and
4. Methodology.
 Second chapter includes literature review.

 Third chapter covers information about Maya Angelou, words about


Maya Angelou, analysis of Maya’s novel, and analysis the element of
racism in Maya Angelou’s novel. Also, analyzing the element of
racism through Marxist view.

 Fourth chapter includes conclusion, recommendations, works cited,
