LESSON 3

THE FIVE LANGUAGE

ART
LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the lesson, you should be able to do the following:

 draw a map indicating the five language arts, their descriptions, and
importance;
 complete a matrix showing the various language arts strategies and skills and their salient
characteristics; and
 write an essay reflecting your personal arguments on the importance of
developing the five language arts.
 Language arts is more than teaching the basics of
literacy. It involves bringing all the grammatical
elements of a language together to create
meanings.
The Five Language Arts

Listening
Listening requires attention. We should not only be
attentive to meaningful sounds uttered but also how the lips
and tongue move to correctly produce those sounds.
Speaking
Speaking is primarily concerned with accuracy of producing
sounds. The learners pay attention as to how the sounds are
produced through correct/proper articulation. This study and
mastery of sounds is called articulatory phonetics.
Reading

Reading requires the learners to focus on the meaning of a sentence.

This is one basic function of language as a tool for communication.
Theories and principles in developing reading skills must be studied.
As a whole, the ultimate purpose of reading is to determine the
meaning of a sentence based on the context of that sentence. A good
background of semantics will be very useful.
Writing
Writing is the most sophisticated of all language skills because the
learners should follow certain steps when developing writing skills.
Mechanics, vocabulary, spelling, and grammar must be mastered to
gain precision of expression, fluency and style. Valins (1993) says
that to write good English, one should obey the principles and
convention of good English.
Viewing

Viewing, as a term, may seem familiar to young learners in teaching language, but as applied
in developing skills in language communication, it makes a difference when your perspectives
of communication is viewed in terms of how you transmit information via language in the
simplest way that is understood by the receiver. One’s way of viewing language must be in the
level where one communicates his/her message reflective of his/her thoughts and ideas.
Viewing is also considered as an essential vehicle to create an atmosphere of ease and good
interpersonal relationship as one transmits the information.
Writing is the most sophisticated of all language skills because
the learners should follow certain steps when developing writing
skills.
