OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the discussion, the learner should be able
to:
Define an implicit function.
Use implicit differentiation in solving the derivative of a
function
Determine higher-order derivatives derive and use formulas
for derivatives of trigonometric functions.

Implicit Function
A function is commonly written in a functional notation
where is considered to be the dependent variable, as the
independent variable, and and as constant. This type of function
is known as an explicit function.
An implicit function is defined by an implicit equation,
associating one variable with another. An equation , on perhaps
certain restricted ranges of the variables, is said to define y
implicitly as a function of x.
Example is the equation of a unit circle .
Important Note !

To understand how to find implicitly, you must realize that the

differentiation is taking place with respect to This means that when you
differentiate terms involving alone, you can differentiate as usual.
However, when you differentiate terms involving you must apply the
Chain Rule, because you are assuming that is defined implicitly as a
differentiable function of

EXERCISE A: Differentiate
Implicitly:

Derivatives of Higher Order
Higher order derivatives maybe obtained in two ways:
1. Differentiate implicitly the derivative of one lower order and replace by the relation previously
found.
Example: Determine the second order derivative:
2.

13
Derivatives of Higher Order
2. Differentiate implicitly both sides of the given equation as many times as necessary to produce the
required derivative and eliminate all the derivatives of lower order.
Example: Determine the second order derivative:
3. 2 𝑦 ′ =2 𝑦 ′′ − 𝑥𝑦 ′ ′
𝑦 ′ =𝑦 ′ ′ (2 − 𝑥)
2( 𝑦 +1) ′′
=𝑦 ( 2 − 𝑥 )
