Primary and

Reflection
What is a Reflective Activity?

This is defined as a result of a disturbance in the

chain of our daily routine. Something that forces us to
pause, think and deliberate about what just happened.
It is a disturbance that makes you stop from your
routine and probe on the situation.
Primary Reflection
In type of reflection, you raise and ask questions that can lead
you to explaining what had just happened and eventually look for a
possible solution to the problem or to the existential break.
Primary examines its object by abstraction, by analytically
breaking it down into its constituent parts. It is concerned with
definitions, essences, and technical solutions to problems.
Secondary Reflection

This type of reflection cannot occur without

involving the inquirer into the inquiry. This reflection
links the inquirer to the subject being inquired.
Compared to Primary Reflection, Secondary Reflection
is synthetic; it unifies rather than divides.

Gabriel
Marcel’s
Embodiment
According to Marcel when answering questions about
the human being, one cannot simply disregard and detach
the body. When we inquire about who we are, we start with
the fact that we have a body. My body is unique compared to
all other biotic and abiotic organisms. He also made
mention that our bodies are not everything we are.

to the Sun and the smallest and is the second planet from
one in the Solar System the Sun. It’s terribly hot
What does it mean to
have a body?

Having a body implies ownership.

Marcel used the analogy of having a
pet as his solidifying example
2 Ways Positive and Negative
There are 2 ways the negative way and the positive way.
The negative way is that I can say that the pet is mine if
nobody makes a claim upon them. Then the positive way is
that I can say that the pet is my pet if its living with me, I am
responsible for its well being and it recognizes and obeys
me.
Owning a body doesn’t just mean merely possessing
it, rather it entails a special way of treating the body.
Treating it in a way by looking at it as not just a body
but as my body. Owning the body entails certain
conditions and responsibilities towards it.

Being in the World

He implies that our very being is to be there, to be in

the world, Being-In-The-World. “To be in the world” means
that our experiences are always situated in our world. We
cannot detach ourselves from our situation. In short,
being-in-the-world means that we live with things, with
other people, and within a particular time and place.
Things
Being-in-the-world means to be with things. It would be
impossible for someone to live without any relation to
things. We seldom look at things around us as objects of
inquiry and investigation but rather we simply look at things
as things we use.
People
Being-in-the-world also means to be with other people.
Our being situated in the world will eventually link us to
people. Just like how we see things as practical and with
their uses, we see people as familiar. Just as things shape
who we are, our relationship with other people also shapes
us.
Place and
Time
Being-in-the-world means that we are situated in place and
time. We are born in a particular era in a particular time that allows
us to see the world within the lens of that era and time. The place
where we are situated in also plays a huge and impactful role in
shaping who we are. The climate, surroundings, environment- all
of these will influence us.
