of い -adjective sentences
Non-past Past
(present/future)

Affirmative あついです あつかったです

Negative あつくないです あつくなかったです


Example:

きのうは あつかったです。
It was hot yesterday.
3. N1 は N2 より adj です

This sentence pattern describes


the quality and/or state of N1 in
comparison with N2.
Example:

この くるまは あの くるまより 
おおきい です。
The car’s bigger than that one.
4. N1 と N2 と どちらが adj  です
か… ..N1/N2 の ほうが adj です

The interrogative どちら is used


when comparing any two items.
サッカーと  やきゅうと 
どちらが  おもしろいです
か。

Which [do you think] is more


interesting, soccer or
baseball?

サッカーの  ほうが  お
もしろいです。

…[I think] soccer’s more


interesting.
Example:

ミラーさんと サントさんと どちらが 
テニスが じょうずですか。
Who’s better at tennis, Mr. Miller or Mr.
Santos?
5.N 「の なか」で { なに、どこ、だれ、いつ } が いちば

ん adj ですか… .N2 が いちばん adj です

で indicates a range. This question pattern is


used to ask the listener to choose, from a
group or category denoted by N 1, a thing,
place, person,time, etc. that exhibits to the
highest degree the state or quality described
by the adjective. The interrogative used is
determined by the kind of category from
which the choice is to be made.
にほんりょうり「の  なん」で 
なにが  いちばん  おいしい
ですか。
Which of all the Japanese
てんぷらが  いちばん  dishes is the most delicious?
おいしいです。
…Tempura is [the most
delicious].
6. Adj の ( の substituting for a noun)

Lesson 2 explained the use of の


in the form N1 の to substitute
for a noun mentioned previously.
The の in the phrase あついの
presented in the present lesson’s
example sentences substitutes for
a noun in a similar way, in the
form adj の .
カリナさんの  かばんは  ど
れですか。
あの  あかくて、おおきいので
Which is Karina’s bag. す。
