Magellan, who is the captain of the ship Trinidad, and
Pigafetta left Seville and descended the Guadalquivir
River to Sanlúcar de Barrameda, at the mouth of the
river. Along Trinidad, there are also other ships
namely Victoria, Conception, San Antonio, and
Santiago.

Magellan set sail from Spain in an effort to find


a western sea route to the rich Spice Islands of
Indonesia. In command of five ships and 270
men, Magellan sailed to West Africa and then to
Brazil, where he searched the South American
coast for a strait that would take him to the
Pacific.

BATTLE OF MACTAN

The warriors of Lapulapu, one of the Datus of Mactan,


overpowered and defeated a Spanish force fighting for
Rajah Humabon of Cebu under the command of
Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan, who was
killed in the battle.
They shot the captain through the right leg
with a poisoned arrow, knocked his helmet
off his head twice.

After Magellan's death, his crew continued in the


single ship that remained, captained by Juan Sebastian
Elcano, a Basque. They returned to Spain along the
way, they had encountered a new ocean, mapped new
routes for European trade, and set the stage for
modern globalism. 270 men who left with the
expedition, only 18 or 19 survivors returned.
