ABOUT ADVOCACY
A series of activities (it is a process)
Citizen Initiatives
To influence the formulation and implementation of public programs and
policies
To pressure and convince state authorities
A set of targeted actions directed at decision makers in support of a specific
policy issue
About bringing positive changes to all levels of society through the
identification of issues, taking of a position, mobilization of resources,
organization of structures and mechanisms, and implementation of strategies
Public Interest Advocacy: large-scale campaign-
style advocacy aimed at addressing issues with the
goal of serving the broad public interest

Policy Advocacy: initiatives focused exclusively on


the policy agenda and a specific policy goal.
Advocates assume that policy change will produce
real change on the ground.
Social Justice Advocacy: strategies involve political
and policy influence around issues that directly affect
people’s lives, especially the lives of the poor and
marginalized.
People-Center Advocacy: strategies aimed at
empowering people to advocate for their rights and
interest themselves. When empowered, people can
better negotiate on their own behalf, for basic needs and
basic rights.
Participatory Advocacy: this extends the boundaries
of public decision-making by engaging civil society
groups in policy debates. This type of advocacy aims to
expand public space and citizenship.
Feminist Advocacy: refers to strategies, skills, and tools
used to influence decision-making processes in the public
and social arenas in order to eliminate inequalities
between women and men .

Identify the issues/problems
Decide on priority issue/s
Identify your allies
Identify target audiences (primary and secondary);
Plan advocacy actions (decide whether you need open or close advocacy)
Decide on the messages to disseminate;
Decide on the mode of communication;

Clearly organize who does what, when, where, and how;
Take actions in accordance with plan;
Be consistent with follow ups (to have results, advocacy must be
sustained)
NETWORKING
Efficient tool for the exchange of knowledge and information;
Tool to disseminate information and knowledge;
By defining common ground and joining forces, networking serves to
strengthen NGOs’ capacities and negotiating abilities;
Goal achieved only through periodic/regular meetings
Promotes democracy and reinforces the developmental role of civil society
organizations.
Contribute to common mission and vision
COORDINATION
Coordination is about integrating various plans through mutual
discussion and exchanging of ideas;
It is about collaboration for results;
It is about ensuring that resources are not wasted through
duplication
