The Origin of the Legumes is a Complex Paleopolyploid
Phylogenomic Tangle Closely Associated with
the Cretaceous– Paleogene (K–Pg) Mass Extinction Event

04
The Cretaceous-Paleogene Mass Extinction (KPG) is a large-scale mass extinction
of animal and plant species that occurred on a short time scale (geological scale),
66 million years ago.

When?
the age of the crown of leguminous plants dates from
the Maasatrichtian or early Paleocene.

01
Where?
The whole genome duplication (WGD) likely contributed to the survival and
evolutionary diversification of the legumes (Leguminosae or Fabaceae) in the wake
of the KPB, and to the rise to ecological dominance of legumes in early Cenozoic
tropical forests.

HOW?
the various events that have occurred make it difficult to reconstruct the
evolutionary history of legumes including evolutionary relationships, times of
divergence and phylogenetic location of WDG events.

using gene tree reconciliation methods, gene count data and the reconstruction of
phylogenetic super networks.

Early legume evolution followed a complex history in which multiple auto and/or
allopolyploidy events coincided with rapid diversification and in association with
the mass extinction event at KBP, implying the evolutionary success of legumes.
