Vertical Milling Machine
•The working principle of the milling
machine, applied in the metal removing
operation on a milling machine. The work is
rigidly clamped on the table of the machine
and revolving multi teeth cutter mounted
either on a spindle.

•The cutter revolves at a normal speed and

the work fed slowly past the cutter. The
work can be fed in a longitudinal, vertical or
cross direction. As the work progress further,
the cutter teeth remove the metal from the
work surface to produce the desired shape.
Safety Analysis
• Slippery floors or loose items around the machine can
cause slips that result in contact with the moving parts of
the machine.
• Swarf can jam the machine or be ejected if allowed to build
up.
• Contacts with cutting fluids, oil and grease can irritate skin.
• Milling machines can cause electric shock.
• Unsupervised use of machines. Inadequate signage.
• Direct contact with moving parts.
Consequences due to Safety Issue
• The operator can be injured by electrical shock
due to working near or contacting with damaged
or poorly maintained live electrical conductors
such as power outlets, extension leads, safety
switches, starters and isolators or casual water
on the floor near plant and machinery.
• The plant operator or others nearby in the
workspace could be exposed to hazardous or
toxic chemicals such as oils, cutting fluids and
coolants, greases, volatile vapours, fumes or
airborne particulates .
• Swarf can jam the machine hence the machine
will undergo in repair condition.
Risk Analysis Matrix
Recommendations to reduce safety issue
• Before cleaning the mill remove cutting tools from the spindle
to avoid cutting yourself.
• ‘Danger’ tags to all milling machines under repair or
maintenance preventing workers from using the equipment.
• Safety Operating Procedures(SOPs) for all milling machines
are available and clearly displayed.
• ‘Safe Working Zone’ around all milling machines are clearly
defined by yellow safety lines.
• All necessary personal protective equipment(PPE) is used
when required.
• Regular checks are made for unsafe wear and damage.
• Procedures are in place for the disposal of all waste materials
around the milling machine.
Comparison
• Existing System:
The existing milling machine can cause electric shock.
Contacts with cutting fluids, oil and grease can irritate skin.

• After alteration:
i) User manual is placed near to the machines
ii)Users are trained to use the machine .
iii)Insulating materials are placed so it can reduce the shock.
iv)Proper dresscode is maintained to avoid irritation of skin.
v)Now the existing system after alteration will not cause any
accident.
Summary
• The vertical milling machine is a precision tool used for
shaping and fabrication by the removal of stock
typically from metallic workpieces.
• The safety measures and precautions should be
practiced in order to avoid accidents in workspaces.
• Hence unsafe acts and unsafe conditions are identified
and corrective measures are proposed.
