Descriptive

measurements of
Random Variable
Objectives:
• Determine the five-summary measures of a given data.
• Use the five-summary measures to determine the type of distribution.
• Use box-and-whisker plot to illustrate the five summary measures.
Coded red and green!
To improve the performance of the students, a mathematics teacher
assigns problem to be accessed through the internet. Once the student
encode the correct password, the log-in and the log-off time are
automatically recorded. To check how serious the students in doing the

Five-number summary

Mdn = Median
Using the five-number summary, compare the following:
a. The distance between the lowest value and the first
quartile, and the distance between the third quartile and the
highest value.
b. The distance between the first quartile and the median, and
the distance between the median and the third quartile.
c. The distance between the lowest value and the median, and
the distance between the median and the highest value.

Box-and-whisker plot
- is a graphical presentation of the range and the inter
quartile range together with the median.
Comparison of Distances
Left Skewed
• the distance from Xs to Mdn is greater than the distance from Mdn to
• The distance from the Xs to Q1 is greater than the distance from Q3 to
• The distance from Q1 to Mdn is greater than the distance from Mdn to
Q3

Symmetrical
• The distance from Xs to Mdn is equal to the distance from Mdn to
• The distance from Xs to Q1 is equal to the distance from Q3 to
• The distance from Q1 to Mdn is equal to the distance from Mdn to Q3
Right Skewed
• The distance from Xs to Mdn is less than the distance from Mdn to
• The distance from Xs to Q1 is less than the distance from Q3 to
• the distance from Q1 to Mdn is less than the distance from Mdn to Q3
