GLASS

WHAT IS GLASS?

 Glass is made from liquid sand.

 Glass is made from natural and abundant raw materials
(sand, soda ash and limestone) that are melted at very
high temperature to form a new material: glass. At high
temperature glass is structurally similar to liquids,
however at ambient temperature it behaves like solids.
As a result, glass can be poured, blown, press and
moulded into plenty of shapes.
HOW IS GLASS MADE?
AMORPHOUS SOLIDS
 Peer through a microscope inside
some glass and you'll find the
molecules from which it's made are
arranged in an irregular pattern. That's
why glass is sometimes referred to as
an amorphous solid (a solid without
the regular crystalline structure that
something like a metal would have).
SOME TERMS WITH GLASS
 non-crystalline
 transparent amorphous solid
 transmit, reflect and refract light
 Pseudo solid & Super cooled liquid.
GLASS INDUSTRY
 The world glass industry generates
yearly revenue of $75 billion, with
leading exporters being the US, France,
Japan, China, India and Germany. The
most common products manufactured in
the global glass industry are flat glass,
glass containers, fiberglass and
specialty products such as lenses, optic
fibres, mirrors, glassware and TV tubes.
FIROZABAD BANGLES
Firozabad is a city and district
headquarters of Uttar Pradesh.
This city is famous for the
construction of bangles. It is
located 40 kilometres from
Agra and 250 km from the capital
city on the east side. Uttar Pradesh’s
capital Lucknow is about 250 km east from
here.

Here you can see the colourful bangles around you. But now the
gas business is over here. Here other glassware (like glass
chandeliers) are also made.

CONCLUSION
 This is the conclusory chapter of the book, which
reviews scientific and technological backgrounds
required for understanding glass mechanics and
technology approaches. The production yields for
conventional soda–lime–silica glass allow worldwide
production of glazing and containers with excellent
performance. Flow, fracture and plasticity of glass are
determinant from the process point of view and for in‐
use performance. Glass mechanics proves to be one of
the most important issues for the glassmaker.
