ARITHEMATIC MEAN –

CONTINUOUS SERIES
 Continuous series means where frequencies are given along with the value of
variables in the form of class interval (which has both lower limit and upper
limit).
 There are 3 methods to find arithematic mean , they are:-
1.Direct method
2.Shortcut method
3.Step deviation method
DIRECT METHOD
 PROBLEM 1
 Steps to find mean using direct method
Marks 0 - 10 10 - 20 20 - 30 30 - 40 40 - 50 50 - 60
are :-
No of 5 10 25 30 20 10
1.Obtain midpoint of the class interval student
using the formula
M= Lower limit – Upper limit Solution -
2 Marks f M or x fx
0 - 10 5 5 25
2. Multiply M with their respective
frequency ‘f’ and total the frequency and 10 - 20 10 15 150 =
denote it as ‘’. 20 - 30 25 25 625 = 3300/ 100
3. Divide with total of frequency ‘N’. 30 - 40 30 35 1050 = 33
Formula = 40 - 50 20 45 900

N 50 - 60 10 55 550 = 33
N = 100 = 3300
SHORTCUT METHOD
 PROBLEM 2

CLASS 0 – 10 10 – 20 20 – 30 30 – 40 40 – 50 50 – 60
Formula to find arithematic mean Frequen 5 10 25 30 20 10
using shortcut method is cy
Solution-
= A Let A be 35 (assumed mean)
N CI x f d = x-A fd
A = Assumed mean 0 – 10 5 5 -30 -150 = A+
N = Total of frequency 10 – 20 15 10 -20 -200 N

d = midpoint – assumed mean 20 – 30 25 25 -10 -250 = 35+ (-200)/100

30 – 40 35 30 0 0 = 35 – 2
fd = frequency d
40 – 50 45 20 10 200 = 33
50 – 60 55 10 20 200
N = 100 fd = -200 = 33
STEP DEVITATION METHOD
Formula to calculate mean using step deviation
method is  Marks
PROBLEM 3 0 - 10 10 – 20 20 - 30 30 - 40
=A+ i
frequency 5 12 15 8
N
i = size of class Interval Solution-
d=
Let A be 5 (assumed mean)
i
CI x f d=x-A/i fd = A+ i
0 - 10 5 5 0 0 N
10 - 20 15 12 10 120 =5+
20 - 30 25 15 15 225 40
30 - 40 35 8 25 200 = 141.25
N = 40

= 141.25
