SOP for viscosity

APPARATUS
1.OSTWALD VISCOMETER - viscometer is a device used to measure the viscosity of the liquid with a known density.

Fluid inlet
Tube with
capillary

Upper timing mark

Measuring sphere

Reservoir

Direct flow Viscometer Reverse Flow viscometer

Used in measuring darker oil like engine
Used in measure viscosity at 40 deg c
oil at 100 deg c

SUCTION PUMP THERMOMETER

PROCEDURE
1. Clean the viscometer

Clean the viscometer Dry it using

using

Oven
Toluene Diesel

2. Set the viscosity bath

Fill the bath with water till the Place the thermometer at the top and maintain the temperature at 40 deg c. Also check the
viscometer can be submerged digital thermometer set at 40 deg c
3. Pour approx. 7 ml of the oil sample in 4. Connect the o ring to it .Put a suction bulb on tube of the viscometer with a
the viscometer through the venting tube capillary and pull the oil upwards till it reaches the top mark of the capillary. Fill a
using a dropper. little above the top mark (see picture)

O ring
5. Put a suction pump on it to hold the oil upwards. Place this viscometer in the viscosity bath. Allow the charged
viscometer to remain in the bath for 20 mins. Remove the suction and let the oil flow from the top mark to the bottom.
Note this time taken using stopwatch. Note that the time should always be more than 200 seconds.

Viscometer kept in viscosity bath.

The flow time has to be checked in the

viscosity bath(this is only used as
reference)
CALCULATION:

Viscosity of sample - v = C × t
Where v= kinematic viscosity in CsT (centistrokes)
C = calibration constant
t = measured flow time in seconds

Formula for finding calibration constant - C= v/t

Where,
v= viscosity of fresh oil
T= measured flow time of fresh oil in seconds

To find value of calibration constant C- Repeat the entire procedure with a fresh oil sample.
