What is heart disease in dogs?
• Heart disease refers to those
diseases or anatomical problems
that affect the heart of the dog, and
as a consequence worsen the
quality of life of the animal and even,
in extreme cases, can lead to death.
• Some factors may be age, breed,
size or quality of nutrition in some
cases.
• The number of beats per minute of the dog according
to its age, the correct or normal ones are:
• Puppies: 110 - 120 beats per minute.
• Adult dogs: 90 - 100 beats per minute.
• Old dogs: 70 - 80 beats per minute.
• The respiratory rate per minute of the dog according to
its age, the correct or normal ones are:
• Puppies: 18 - 20 breaths per minute.
• Adult dogs: 16 - 18 breaths per minute.
• Old dogs: 14 - 16 breaths per minute.
Types of heart disease in dogs
• Congenital heart disease
This type of heart disease is not as common
as others.
However, congenital heart diseases in dogs
are serious and only a small percentage of
them resolve completely.
This heart disease affects the blood vessels
or heart chambers.
• Acquired heart disease
This type of heart disease can appear
throughout the dog's life and is due to
cardiovascular alterations.
They usually affect the heart valves or the
myocardium.
This heart disease in dogs is degenerative
and affects the heart valves and worsens
with age.
• Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy
This type of heart disease in dogs is an
unusual heart disease.
It is based on a thickening and increased
stiffness of the musculature of the heart
walls.
This causes the blood circulation to
decrease so that less blood reaches the
rest of the body, as well as the amount that
returns to the body.
• Canine Dilated Cardiomyopathy
This cardiomyopathy causes the dog's heart to
It affects the muscle fibers causing them to
contract weakly, which causes the walls to thin,
and the ventricles and atria to expand and
It causes the dog's heart to not be able to pump
blood properly, affecting the oxygenation process
in the rest of the body.
Symptoms of canine heart disease
Some of the most common symptoms
that dogs with heart disease present are:
1. Cough
2. Vomiting
3. Decreased physical activity
4. Breathing problems
5. Fainting
6. Sudden weight loss
7. Increased time at rest
Diagnosis of heart disease in dogs
Heart diseases will be diagnosed by several
types of tests:
• Auscultation
• Electrocardiograms
• X-rays
• Echocardiogram
Treatment of heart disease
This type of diseases cannot be completely cured,
but we seek to improve the animal's quality of life
with:
• Low sodium feed.
• Medications that improve the contractility of the
heart.
• Diuretics
• Vasodilators
• Antihypertensives
• Antiarrhythmics
Dog breeds predisposed to heart problems
Dog breeds that are prone to heart problems.
• Norfolk terrier
• Spaniel toy inglés
• Bearded collie
• Bullterrier
• Dálmata
• Gran Danés
• Berger picard
