PL 2021-22 24
Reflective Learning
• Why is reflective learning important for us?
• Reflective learning helps students make the transition
from passive to active learners.
• What do I mean by this?

PL 2021-22 25
• So why is it important to know the difference?
o This is because you must concentrate on the
final objective: learning

Reflective • You want to learn and therefore, find the best way.
• Think about ways for yourself to learn not just

Learning study because you may spend hours studying

but feel that this has not helped you learn.
• So studying does not necessarily result in
learning.

PL 2021-22 26
• What is the difference, if any, between studying
and learning?

Reflective • Learn – to gain knowledge or skill by studying,

practising, being taught, or experiencing
something.
Learning • Study – to read, memorise facts, attend school,
etc., in order to learn about a subject

PL 2021-22 27
28
PL 2021-22
Habits
• Bad habits hold you back
• Unless you analyse what you are doing – will remain
unaware of better ways of doing things
• Reflective learning is highly individual – no guidebook
on how it’s done
• Do not think of it as a task on a ‘to do list’ or squeezed

PL 2021-22 29
Habit: Questions
• Do you have any ‘bad’ habits?
• How do think this/these could impact your learning?
Group Work • How have you tried to overcome them/it?
• Share your thoughts with a classmate... (15 mins)

PL 2021-22 30
Mindset
Mindset is important
• Fixed intelligence mindset
o Intelligence is static
o You have a certain amount of it
• Growth intelligence mindset
o Intelligence can be developed
o You can grow it with actions

Dweck, Carol (2006) Mindset: The New Psychology of Success.

PL 2021-22 32
Growth • Self-refection is important in order to achieve the
growth intelligence mindset – you have to believe
Intelligence that you can get better results with hard work and
that intelligence is not a fixed trait.

PL 2021-22 33
Frameworks to help you

• Gibb’s Reflective Cycle (Gibbs, 1988)

PL 2021-22 34
PL 2021-22 35
PL 2021-22 36
• David Kolb published his learning styles model in
1984.
Kolb’s • Kolb's experiential learning theory works on two
levels: a four-stage cycle of learning and four
Learning separate learning styles.
• “Learning is the process whereby knowledge is
Cycle created through the transformation of experience”
(Kolb, 1984, p. 38).

PL 2021-22 37
• How can I as a student apply Kolb to my studying?
Applying • Can you think of your experiences where Kolb’s

Kolb cycle can be applied?

PL 2021-22 38

• Think of the 10 hours you prepared before you came to class, the
3hours you spent in class, and the additional extra time you revised.
• REMEMBER, the slides you did in class is only a very small part of
information, you do not need to tell me what is on the slides… I can
read for myself!
• You simply need to mention the main topic we did in that week. The
module is called Personalised Learning, so what did you learn about
YOURSELF, not the content!!!
• The process of reflective writing requires you to be honest about the
situation and your own responses.
